Ruben Amorim listened to Paul Scholes’ advice, Man Utd now have major regret heading towards Europa League final

Ruben Amorim has listened to advice from Paul Scholes and now Manchester United have a major regret heading towards the Europa League final next week.

Manchester United are approaching a game which feels extremely important for Ruben Amorim after a difficult opening six months in charge of the club.

He will either be entering his first full season at Old Trafford as the first United manager to finish 16th (or potentially 17th) in the Premier League, or as the second-ever United manager to win European silverware within his first year at the club.

United travel back to Bilbao to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final next Wednesday and the winner of that game will not only earn silverware, but also a place in the 2025/26 cou League campaign.

It has been apparent for some time now that the Europa League is the focus at Old Trafford, which has earned Amorim criticism from certain ex-players.

Amorim received advice from Scholes

Amorim had rotated in a couple of Premier League games after tough European clashes and United’s poor domestic form continued.

Paul Scholes slammed the manager for this last week and stated that the manager is lining up in Premier League games without the ambition of winning the games.

“They’ve clearly sacrificed the league,” Scholes said in his TNT Sports column. “I don’t like it and I don’t agree with it and I believe there has to be some sort of standards required in a Premier League team.

“It’s almost as if they go into Premier League games and there’s an acceptance that they’re not going to win the game, which is madness. I think the acceptance has come from everyone.

“I think it’s come from the manager even though he won’t admit it. He’s not playing teams to win games of football in the league.”

Scholes’ advice backfired for Amorim and United

Amorim seemed to take on the constructive criticism from Scholes and his team to face West Ham on the weekend was essentially full strength. United lost and Leny Yoro got injured.

Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like the Frenchman’s injury is too serious but there remain doubts over his ability to start the Europa League final next week. He has been one of United’s best players in recent months.

Dealing with Premier League games has been a dilemma for Amorim as he would be criticised for rotating the entire team, but there are no guarantees of a result even with a strong side.

But with the next game against Chelsea coming five days before the final, Amorim seems unlikely to be listening to the likes of Scholes again.
