Ruben Amorim has learnt from a confusing mistake he made against Real Sociedad last week as Manchester United have confirmed the decision.

Manchester United will face Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Europa League round-of-16 tie this Thursday after the first leg ended in a draw.

With their Premier League form struggling, winning the Europa League represents United’s best opportunity to claim silverware and secure European football for next season.

Ruben Amorim’s side remain unbeaten in the competition and delivered a dominant display in the first leg in San Sebastián. However, despite their control, United were held to a 1-1 draw after Sociedad were awarded a controversial penalty.

The decisive showdown will take place at Old Trafford this week, with both teams dealing with injury concerns ahead of this crucial encounter.

Amorim learns from mistake as Scanlon makes B-List

One of the major issues for United in the first-leg was the lack of attacking options available to come off the bench for the team.

Rasmus Højlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho started the game and the only real option off the bench in those areas was Christian Eriksen.

United needed an unpredictable and direct threat to hurt Sociedad’s tiring defenders and fans were bemused as to why Amorim did not include any Academy forwards in the squad.

It seems like the head coach has learnt from that mistake after the club confirmed that James Scanlon, as well as Tyler Fredricson, had been added to the B-List for the Europa League.

That means the Academy pair are set to be involved against the Spanish side and Scanlon is the type attacking winger that Amorim missed last week.

United staff were “confused” at Scanlon’s situation

Scanlon does not only fit the right profile for what’s missing in this injury-struck United side, but he is also in excellent form this season.

The 18-year-old winger has 17 goals and six assists in just 24 appearances for the Academy teams so far this season.

In fact, previous reports suggested that staff at Carrington were “confused” as to why Scanlon was not among the players receiving callups to first-team training and games under Amorim.

That looks like it may have finally changed, and while there is no guarantee the youngster takes to the pitch on Thursday night, it is very useful to at least have the option there.
