Ruben Amorim is extremely impressed by Manchester United starlet in pre-season, “he’s earning respect on the pitch”

Ruben Amorim is said to be extremely impressed by one Manchester United starlet during pre-season so far this summer.

Manchester United have had a productive pre-season campaign so far this summer, with three games under their belt already.

The latest win against Bournemouth was the standout, not just because of the 4-1 scoreline but also the performance across the 90 minutes.

Ruben Amorim’s side delivered an intense display matched with quality and when the youngster’s came on in the latter stages of the game, they continued the dominance.

Ethan Williams scored the fourth and final goal for United on the night and he was assisted by new signing Diego Leon, who fell to the floor after a powerful run.

Leon joined the club from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño earlier this summer in a deal which could eventually reach £7 million with add-ons.

After arriving at Carrington at the beginning of July, Leon was desperate to showcase his levels and why he should remain with the first-team next season.

He was rewarded with a spot on the pre-season tour and has played in every game so far. Now, Paraguayan journalist Christian Martin has explained how the 18-year-old is getting on behind the scenes.

Speaking to Versus Paraguay, Martin said how Amorim “really likes Diego León’s physical strength; how he drives forward through the middle when he has the ball. Really very physical.”

“In training and off the pitch, he’s clicked with the group. He’s integrated very well,” he added.

“He’s earning respect on the pitch with good performances, lots of energy, really pushing the team. For now, the balance is fantastic.

“They want powerful players to bring back that combative spirit that used to define the club.”

He also explained how there are no plans for Leon to head out on loan this season, which suggests that he will be the backup for Patrick Dorgu at left wingback.

Leon’s role in Williams goal shows his ability

Leon’s role in Williams’ goal seemed to perfectly showcase his abilities as a player.

After a slightly heavy touch when receiving a long pass, the teenager used his physicality to reach the ball and bundle over the 6’6 Philip Billing.

Some quick feet and a powerful driving run allowed him to enter the Bournemouth penalty area but he was moving too quickly for his feet to keep up and he himself took a tumble before Williams took over.

The talent is there for everyone to see and the physical attributes are very useful, but there is still a lot to improve if he wants to play regularly in the first-team.

Some game-time in the Under-21s seems to make sense for Leon but it is clear that he has been impressing Amorim and his coaches this summer.
