Ruben Amorim is ‘desperate’ to keep £190,000-a-week Man Utd star, he is ‘putting pressure’ on INEOS
Ruben Amorim is reportedly ‘desperate’ to keep one of his Manchester United stars amid a potential exit in the summer transfer window.
Since Ruben Amorim took charge at Old Trafford last month, United’s form has been inconsistent. In his first 10 games, the team has managed just four wins, highlighting the challenges of adapting to his system.
While some players, such as Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui, have demonstrated they could play a long-term role under the Portuguese manager, the performances of others have underscored the need for reinforcements in future transfer windows.
However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s latest cost-cutting measures have provided a grim reminder of the financial situation at Old Trafford.
United will almost certainly need to see a significant amount of departures in the upcoming windows to be able to secure top signings to improve Amorim’s squad.
Amorim wants Maguire to stay
One player who has been rumoured to depart is Harry Maguire, currently the fifth longest-serving player at the club. He is one of six players with contracts expiring at the end of the season.
Reports have suggested that the club would prefer to negotiate a new contract with the English defender rather than extend his current deal.
The former Leicester City man is reportedly on around £190,000-a-week at Old Trafford and United may want him to decrease that salary should be stay.
According to a new report from GiveMeSport, United boss Amorim is pushing the key decision makers at Old Trafford to extend Maguire’s contract.
The Portuguese boss has identified the central defender as one of the more reliable players within the dressing room since he took charge.
It was explained that the head coach is ‘desperate’ to keep the 31-year-old, who will be able to talk with foreign clubs in January if he does not sign new terms before then.
The report finalised that the United boss is ‘putting pressure’ on the INEOS decision-makers to ensure that Maguire remains at the club.
Maguire staying at United is the right decision
United have many problems that they need to address in upcoming transfer windows, whether it be at wingback, midfield or striker.
They will also likely have to strengthen at centre-back anyway due to the inevitable exits of Victor Lindelöf and Jonny Evans.
Amorim’s system requires more players able to play centre-back, and Maguire has shown that he looks comfortable in the middle of the back three.
If he was to leave the club, it would take more cash and focus away from other positions in the transfer market unless Amorim plans to promote from within at Carrington.

Maguire is also clearly a good influence behind-the-scenes and United will be losing other experienced members of the squad in the summer.
Everything points towards Maguire staying being a smart decision. If the leaders at Old Trafford are able to negotiate a two-year deal on more favourable financial terms, it would be good business.
