Rúben Amorim has heaped praise on a trait that goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been showing during his opening months at Manchester United.
Manchester United fought back to claim a 2–2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in an action-packed Premier League meeting on Saturday afternoon.
The opening period was evenly poised, with United seeing plenty of the ball but struggling to create clear chances. Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock for Rúben Amorim’s side, heading in from close range after a superb cross from Amad.
United held their advantage at the break, but Tottenham came out stronger in the second half. Senne Lammens produced several key saves to keep the hosts at bay, while Brennan Johnson had a goal disallowed for offside just after the hour mark.
Both managers made late changes in search of a decisive goal, and substitute Mathys Tel levelled the score for Spurs with seven minutes remaining.
In stoppage time, Richarlison appeared to have completed the comeback, but Matthijs de Ligt’s towering header in the dying moments ensured United took a well-earned point back from North London.
Amorim full of praise for Lammens vs Tottenham
Lammens made his debut for United at the beginning of October during a 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford, and fast forward six weeks, and he is yet to lose a game in Red.
The 23-year-old has played important roles in United’s wins against Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton, while also making crucial saves against both Nottingham Forest and Tottenham. His composure has been a breath of fresh air compared to the frantic nature of André Onana and Altay Bayındır.
This has not gone unnoticed by Amorim, either. Often, if Onana or Bayındır were to make a mistake in a game, they would end up having a performance littered with errors. But after an early poor touch by Lammens, the Belgian stayed composed and made crucial saves later on in the tie.
“He’s doing really well,” Amorim said when asked about Lammens by TNT Sports after the game.
“He’s very adult, and he understands that in a game, a lot of things can happen, but especially for a goalkeeper, you need to move on from anything that happened in the last minute.
“So it’s like a new game every time the ball is on the pitch. I think [despite being] 23 years old, he understands that quite well.”
Lammens is like the United keepers of old
United have been looking for a steady shot-stopper since David de Gea left, but even then, the Spaniard departed United after a few poor seasons in goal.
But, with Lammens now the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, former United winger Lee Sharpe feels the Belgian shares traits with two United No. 1s of old.
“Senne Lammens has made some great saves already for Manchester United and seems very calm,” Sharpe said earlier this week. “I’ve seen a few comparisons to Peter Schmeichel, but Peter certainly wasn’t calm!
“I can see similarities between the two in the shot-stopping category and in the way he commands his box; he isn’t afraid of coming for crosses, in the same way Peter was.

“I actually see a combination of similarities between Peter and Edwin van der Sar with Lammens; he has the calmness and presence of Edwin but the shot-stopping and goalkeeping prowess of Peter.
“I hope it’s not a flash in the pan for him and Manchester United, and this can continue. He’s got to be consisten,t but you’re already seeing the confidence that he is putting into his defenders.
“He’s kept clean sheets and are keeping out shots that may well have gone in with other keepers in goal – I hope he can keep it up.”
