Ruben Amorim has left Manchester United staff “confused” with his decision to snub “unstoppable” starlet
Ruben Amorim has left some Manchester United staff scratching their heads about one decision to overlook an “unstoppable” starlet.
Manchester United have so many exciting talents within the Academy system at Old Trafford.
Since Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho emerged as first-team regulars, the youth teams have been impressing, particularly in the last 18 months.
The club’s Under-18s side won three trophies last term and are in a good position in multiple competitions this season too.
James Scanlon has been one of the standout talents, with the wide-forward’s performances this campaign being described as “unstoppable”.
Scanlon overlooked by Amorim for United first-team involvement
Scanlon has been one of the best performing youth players at United so far this season, with 14 goals and five assists in 20 games.
While Chido Obi stole the headlines with his hat-trick against Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup, Scanlon also managed to score two goals in that game.
However, while seven of his Academy teammates managed to get first-team experience on the weekend, the 18-year-old winger was not involved in North London.
Due to a recent injury crisis, Elyh Harrison, Tyler Fredricson, Harry Amass, Sekou Kone, Jack Fletcher, Jack Moorhouse and Obi were named on Amorim’s bench for the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Obi made his debut as the only substitute on the night.
Scanlon reportedly worked with the first-team in training ahead of the game but it was ultimately decided that he would play with the Under-21s on Monday night instead.
United staff confused about Scanlon snub
It has been reported by MailSport that those close to Scanlon have been left “scratching their heads” at him being overlooked for some other Academy players.
The report added that some staff at Carrington are “confused” that the 18-year-old has not been getting as many first-team opportunities despite his form this season.
Scanlon has already made his his mark on the international stage, with 10 caps for Gibraltar after making his debut in March 2024.
But the teenager has had limited time in first-team training at United and it seems like there is a feeling that he deserves that chance.
It has also been bizarre that most of his games this season have come for the Under-18s rather than the Under-21s. He looks above the level and even showed that last season.
