Ruben Amorim has learned Man United’s ‘two biggest casualties’ from 3-4-3 formation change
Ruben Amorim has learned that two Manchester United stars do not fit into his new 3-4-3 system at Old Trafford.
Manchester United appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach last month and he has had mixed form since joining.
With five wins in his opening nine games, Amorim has started to find out important things about his playing squad.
The 39-year-old immediately implemented his well-known 3-4-3 system, and it has already become clear that new signings are needed.
Some players have adapted to his instructions quickly, such as Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui, while others look like they don’t exactly fit into the plans.
Garnacho and Rashford don’t suit Amorim’s formation
It has been claimed by former Premier League player Shaun Wright-Phillips that Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho do not suit Amorim’s new formation.
Both players are natural left-wingers, however, this system instead has two attackers who are more central, with the wingbacks holding the width.
Wright-Phillips suggested that those two players don’t fit either of those positions and will find it difficult to start consistently under Amorim.
“I think, not because of talent, but Rashford and Garnacho have got a problem because they’re not used to playing that 10 position, both of them are used to being very wide,” he explained when sportscasting.com asked him who the two biggest casualties would be under Amorim.
“He doesn’t play wide wingers; he plays with wingbacks, and I don’t think either of those two could be a wingback.
“I think they’re going to find it hard to get into Amorim’s team in terms of attacking positions because I don’t think he knows his front two or three yet.”
Amorim will not change approach
It is already clear that Amorim won’t move away from his approach. United fans have already seen a manager compromise their tactics due to player quality in Erik ten Hag.
That did not work for him and many supporters were unhappy about how things unfolded, which will make them appreciate Amorim’s stance even more.
This season will undoubtably have further challenges as the team continue to learn the system, but it will give more chance of there being long-term benefits.

Amorim explained it well. “We have two ways: we forget about the new idea – and I think that’s why I was brought here in the middle of the season – and we try to cope with what they are used to doing. And next year, at the same stage, we will be here with the same problems.
“Or we start now, we risk a little bit, we suffer a little bit and next year we will be better at this point. So we have to risk it a little bit.”
