Rúben Amorim has finally delivered on his Manchester United AFCON promise – he must now keep it

Before AFCON began, Ruben Amorim said he would utilise Manchester United’s Academy to cover for absences – so far, he has delivered on his promise.

It was a proud day for those connected to Carrington as Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey became the 255th and the 256th Academy graduates to make their debut for Manchester United.

Lacey is a diminutive winger who likes to dazzle opponents with his dribbling. Slight in frame, he often draws comparisons with Manchester City rival Phil Foden.

He certainly will be hoping to lace up his boots and force his way into the manager’s plans.

If he can emulate fellow Liverpudlian and United legend Wayne Rooney, he will go on to have a glittering career in a United shirt.

Fletcher to follow in his dad’s footsteps?

Fletcher looked calm and composed in his work when he entered the pitch at Villa Park – he is a tempo setter. His skillset may be relied upon in the coming games with injuries to Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

The family are very closely tied with United at the moment, with dad, Darren Fletcher, coaching the Under-18s and Jack’s twin brother, Tyler, a regular for the Under-21s.

John Aston Snr and John Aston Jnr were the original trailblazers. Aston Snr was part of Sir Matt Busby’s first trophy-winning side, claiming the FA Cup in 1948 and a league title four years on. His son later etched his name into United history, starring as Man of the Match in the famous 1968 European Cup final against Benfica, having already lifted the league title the previous season.

The feat was nearly repeated with Charlie and Robbie Savage. Charlie made his United debut in the illustrious Champions League, and Robbie came through with the fabled Class of ’92 players, but ultimately did not make the cut.

Celebrating the Academy is crucial

Sir Bobby Charlton remains the Academy’s most prolific graduate, scoring 249 goals, and for many years he also held the club’s appearance record with 758 outings.

That landmark was eventually surpassed by Ryan Giggs, who fittingly moved ahead of a fellow European Cup winner during the 2008 Champions League final. Giggs would go on to set an untouchable benchmark of his own, amassing 963

On the fifth of December, 1937, Tom Manley would start a remarkable sequence – the first of 4,000 consecutive United games to feature a youth product in the squad.

Representation from the other home nations followed in the years that came after, with Republic of Ireland captain Jonny Carey debuting in September 1937, Northern Ireland’s Jackie Blanchflower appearing in November 1951, Scotland’s Alex Dawson in April 1957, and Wales’ Kenny Morgans rounding out the list in December 1957.

That foundation would soon give rise to the Academy’s most iconic generations, first through the Busby Babes – a youthful, home-grown side that redefined English football in the 1950s – and later through the Class of ’92, whose influence shaped an era and reaffirmed Manchester United’s enduring commitment to success and producing talent from within.
