Rúben Amorim has been given key advice regarding Matheus Cunha’s pending transfer to Manchester United this summer.
Manchester United are reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha this summer, as they look to bolster Rúben Amorim’s attacking options.
This season, the club has struggled with consistent goal-scoring, relying heavily on captain Bruno Fernandes, particularly after Amad was sidelined for the past two months due to injury.
Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund have combined for just 21 goals this campaign, with only five players reaching more than ten goal involvements. Marcus Rashford, who is set to be sold this summer, is one of them.
As a result, Amorim is focusing on reinforcing his squad with players who fit his 3-4-3 formation, with Cunha seen as the ideal fit for the left attacking role.
Amorim handed “wonderful” Cunha transfer verdict
United have been lacklustre in attack this season, with the club scoring just 42 goals in 35 Premier League fixtures this season, well below par.
However, it is hoped that Cunha’s pending signing can change this, and former Wolves defender Michael Gray has been raving about the 25-year-old’s “wonderful” abilities that can aid Amorim and United, explaining that the player can play in different positions aside from the left forward role.
“You look at players in other teams and you say to yourself, ‘They could play for Manchester United,’ and I think Matheus Cunha is one of them,” Gray said.
“He’s a ball-carrying number ten who can also play in different positions, and I think he’s a wonderful player. Whether you think £60 million is a bargain or not, if you can get him through the door early, then it shows you mean business, but Manchester United need a lot more than that.
“He improves them, without a doubt, because he’s creative, scores goals, and he takes the pressure off everybody else as well. You know that something’s going to happen when he’s on the ball. If they can get that deal done, then they should go and do it.”
“It looks like his priority is to sign for Manchester United, and he could probably go to any club in Europe and set it alight.
“He will be loved by the supporters because there aren’t many players like him, and you think of Jack Grealish when he was at Aston Villa, a ball-carrying midfielder, and the fans loved him. Cunha’s that type of player. He gets you off your seat, he’s exciting, and Manchester United needs players like that. If he signs for them, he’d be a brilliant signing.”
Amorim must listen to Gray’s position advice
While it’s expected that Cunha will primarily start in the left-forward role under Amorim, the United head coach must listen to advice that Cunha can play in more than one position.

United have struggled up front at times this season, with Højlund and Zirkzee failing to establish themselves as reliable goal scorers while playing in the No. 9 space. Cunha also has a track record of playing as a striker, which is a fantastic trait that Amorim must utilise.
By all accounts, Amad will likely be United’s primary attacking force on the right flank next season. With the Ivorian and the Brazilian players keen to link up with their teammates on the pitch, Amorim must trial Cunha as a striker to allow him to partner with Amad.
Cunha has already made over 260 career appearances for his various clubs and 13 for Brazil’s national team, meaning he will also be able to guide Højlund out of his tough spell and hopefully toward more fruitful fixtures next term.
