Rúben Amorim told five Manchester United players he must keep as Patrick Dorgu verdict given
Rúben Amorim has been told five players he must keep at Manchester United as a verdict is given on Patrick Dorgu’s role within the squad.
Rúben Amorim’s start to life at Manchester United has been anything but straightforward since replacing Erik ten Hag as head coach.
Appointed in mid-November with United languishing in 12th place in the Premier League and struggling in the Europa League with just one win, the 40-year-old set about the daunting task of reviving a fractured club.
There have been glimpses of progress, including statement victories away to Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency has remained a problem. Under Amorim, United have won nine of their first 18 matches, losing seven and drawing two.
Beyond the pitch, he has also had to manage off-field turbulence, with financial constraints limiting the club’s flexibility and speculation mounting over the futures of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and others.
Five players Amorim must keep
Amid United’s current financial concerns, rumours are swirling around the players Amorim will be able to keep at United going forward as they look to raise funds to help steer their financial issues in the right direction.
However, there is also an argument to be made that, although Amorim has publically explained he wants to keep as many of his current squad as possible, some of the players may not be fit to continue within his new system, and should therefore be sold.
However, former United defender Paul Parker has explained that he feels there are five players that United must keep beyond 2025 as they are the most important players in the team.
“You have to look at Bruno Fernandes, Noussair Mazraoui, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Amad,” Parker told BetFred.
“Those five players I’d say are the most important in this team and they play regularly in the big games. For me, if Manchester United are serious about the game, then those five players need to play.”
How important Dorgu may be this season
United are also set to announce the signing of 20-year-old Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in the coming days, with the young Serie A star touted to become the club’s first-choice left wing-back.

However, some have had concerns that with the player being fairly young, he may struggle if Amorim chooses to throw him straight into first-team action, but with Drogu having made 57 senior appearances already, Parker believes the player may be up for the challenge.
“I’d expect it because at the end of the day, there’s no point spending good money on a player and making them sit and watch,” Parker explained.
“There’s no sitting and watching at Manchester United anymore. You get them in there straight away and have a look at them. There’s going to be some good things, there’s going to be some bad things, but from what you hear, he’s very good at going forward.
“If he’s going to play as a wing-back, being more forward orientated is always a plus because for example, Diogo Dalot is a full-back, not a wing-back, and he’s powerful, but not athletic.”
