Ruben Amorim faces setback as ‘great market opportunity’ snubs transfer, Man Utd want upgrade on £120,000-a-week star

Ruben Amorim has faced a transfer setback as one player has publicly snubbed the chance of joining Manchester United with a preference to remain at his current club.

There has been a lot of attention about fixing Manchester United’s problems at the top of the pitch, with the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Viktor Gyokeres touted as the solutions.

However, the Reds also have issues at the back and many would consider an upgrade on André Onana to be a priority in the coming weeks.

A recent report claimed that United had stepped up their pursuit of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has yet to agree a new contract with PSG ahead of its expiry next summer.

Talks over an extension have been ongoing for months, but it was reported that the Italian international reportedly feels the club hasn’t fully backed him or shown strong commitment to keeping him.

Donnarumma snubs United transfer

Donnarumma had a standout Champions League campaign last season as PSG went onto win the final in Germany and despite these rumours, he has made it clear publicly that he wants to stay in Paris.

Asked by Sky Italia about the rumours around his future, the United target explained that he is expecting to sign a new deal at the Parc des Princes.

After Italy’s 2-0 win against Moldova on Monday evening, Donnarumma said: “My priority is to stay at PSG. I don’t think there will be problems in the negotiations.”

ESPN have clarified that United enquired about the possibility of signing the world-class shot-stopper due to the uncertainty around his contract.

It was added that both United and Ruben Amorim want an upgrade on current first-choice ‘keeper Onana and saw Donnarumma as a great market opportunity.

United have major question marks over Onana

It is not guaranteed that United sign a first-choice goalkeeper this summer but it is clear that there are major question marks over Onana, who reportedly earns £120,000-a-week.

Altay Bayındır is likely going to leave so it feels more likely that the Reds sign someone who can challenge the Cameroon shot-stopper more than the Turkish international did.

There are unlikely to be many offers on the table for Onana, and it feels like the most-likely conclusion is for him to have another season at Old Trafford.

But there are no guarantees that he will be the undisputed first-choice which has been the case ever since he joined from Inter in 2023.
