Rúben Amorim explains what he saw in Manchester United training this week that excites him
Rúben Amorim has opened up on what he’s seen from his Manchester United team in training this week that will no doubt excite him ahead of the Europa League clash with Real Sociedad.
Manchester United shift their focus back to the Europa League as they prepare to face Real Sociedad in the second leg of their round of 16 tie at Old Trafford.
The first leg in San Sebastián saw Joshua Zirkzee put Rúben Amorim’s side ahead, but Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty ensured the contest remains level at 1-1 on aggregate.
With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, both sides will be desperate to gain the upper hand. The winner will go on to face either Olympique Lyonnais or FCSB, with Lyon holding a 3-1 lead ahead of their second leg.
United’s most recent outing was a 1-1 draw with Arsenal, a result that carried plenty of positives. A lively Old Trafford crowd is expected as the Reds look to secure their place in the next round on Thursday night.
Amorim reveals what he saw in training
In the last few days, a lot has been made of the future of many of United’s players as the side have been underperforming.
A similar set of questions has also been applied to Amorim himself, with some suggesting that the young manager is not good enough to succeed and guide United back to the top of the Premier League table.
However, speaking in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Amorim explained that in the last few days in training, he has seen that his players want this club to succeed “really bad” and that they have been showing how desperate they are to beat Sociedad tomorrow evening.
“If you are a top player and you play in this club, even me, a lot of people say that I’m not good enough for the club and my feeling is that you can change that with results,” Amorim said.
“So I think in training I feel that they want this really bad and especially for tomorrow.”

Speaking further, Amorim was asked about how winning in the Europa League can keep this season alive, to which he replied: “In that context, it is also important; it will give us more energy to continue the season. It is not going to change a lot, but it can give us energy.”
As explained above, winning the Europa League is United’s only route back into the Champions League for next season, and the club’s finances and how much they are able to invest in the squad hangs in the balance.
With Amorim seeing his players want to succeed on Thursday and for the rest of this season, this will no doubt fill him with hope that the club can yet salvage the remaining fixtures of this campaign.
