Rúben Amorim has explained a “really fun” difference he has discovered between Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha at Manchester United.
Rúben Amorim left no room for doubt in his summer talks with Manchester United’s board – he wants attacking experience, and he wants it secured before the 2025/26 season begins.
Though a new striker remains on the agenda, United have already strengthened their frontline with the £127.5 million signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Cunha hit 15 Premier League goals last term, while Mbeumo racked up 20 – far exceeding the tally of any United player apart from Bruno Fernandes, who scored 19 across all competitions.
The duo are set to line up together for the first time during the club’s pre-season tour in the United States, with fans eager to see them build chemistry ahead of the season opener against Arsenal on 17 August.
A major difference between Cunha and Mbeumo
United’s two new signings are both fantastic footballers, but they offer very different dynamics on the pitch. Cunha is a player with flair and passion who plays off the cuff, while Mbeumo is calm, measured, and has almost unparalleled output.
However, the contrasts do not stop there. Speaking with NBC Sports ahead of United’s pre-season clash with West Ham, Amorim explained that the two also have distinct personalities, but that they complement each other well.
“He played more or less in the same system in the last club,” Amorims said when asked about Cunha. “He’s a top player, can play in different positions. He’s really loud in the dressing room. He’s Brazilian. So I love that on him.
“He’s completely different from Bryan. Bryan is the opposite. So it’s really fun to combine all the characters and the talent in the club.”
United need a mix of personalities at Old Trafford
Cunha and Mbeumo’s impact off the pitch is just as significant as their impact on it, as Amorim needs to create an unbreakable bond within the dressing room if he wants to build a squad capable of bringing United back to the top.
While Cunha’s extroverted manner will be a source of motivation and joy to other players during good times, Mbeumo’s ability to stay calm and composed during more challenging moments will be a guide for others to follow.
United has a few players with very powerful personalities, such as Fernandes, Casemiro, and André Onana, and the dynamic duo of Cunha and Mbeumo will only add to this.
Playing for the great Old Trafford club is a heavy weight on the shoulders of all, and those with the badge on their chest must be able to bear and represent United as best they can. The eclectic manner of Cunha and the composed nature of Mbeumo will go a long way for both players.
