Rúben Amorim ‘expected to start’ Kobbie Mainoo and two other Man Utd stars vs Grimsby, “unbelievable” player dropped

Ruben Amorim is expected to give three Manchester United stars their first starts of the season this Wednesday against Grimsby Town.

After a disappointing start the the 2025/26 Premier League season, Rúben Amorim is expected to rotate a team that has yet to record a win in the first two games, and give three benched players their first starts.

Fulham proved that Amorim is yet to find the perfect starting eleven with this current squad, as the team failed to get the better of the London side.

The Carabao Cup second round vs Grimsby is the perfect opportunity for players, like Kobbie Mainoo and Andre Onana, to burst into the starting eleven.

The media have been speculating as to who will get gametime, with the previously mentioned players “expected to start” in that first Carabao Cup fixture for United.

Onana expected to replace Bayindir

Altay Bayindirwho was called “unbelievable” by Amorim – has been unconvincing in the first two games of the season, conceding a controversial goal to Arsenal in a 1-0 loss during the first game.

Onana, who was expected to leave this summer, has been told he is now staying at the club and will likely start this Wednesday against Grimsby.

Amorim said in an interview, “Yes. We have three games this week and we have quality players and we need to do rotation to try to win every game.”

Emphasising that the squad needs to be rotated to keep the squad fresh, giving players a chance to impress and break into Amorim’s plans for future games.

Onana faces a mountain of pressure to overthrow Bayindir for a starting spot, especially with the potential signing of Senne Lammens, who has reportedly agreed on personal terms with the club last week.

Mainoo and Sesko to be given opportunities in cup games

Mainoo is without a minute so far this season, despite many fans believing he is the club’s best academy prospect in recent years.

Amorim appears to favour Mainoo as a back-up to captain Bruno Fernandes, and has chosen both Casemiro and Mason Mount as preferred options as his partner this season.

Benjamin Šeško follows suit. After signing for £73 million, the Slovenian has only made two cameos off the bench so far and is without a goal as of yet.

“Sometimes one is playing, at other moments, another is going to play. We have the cups, so there will be a lot of games for everybody,” Amorim commented.

Both are expected to start this Wednesday, with the two needing to impress to break into the starting eleven, fans will anticipate a promising performance from the pair.
