Rúben Amorim has hinted that one of his current Manchester United crop is set to start against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon at Anfield.
With the October 2025 international break wrapped up, Manchester United return to Premier League action with a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.
Rúben Amorim’s side currently sit 10th in the table after winning three of their opening seven matches, but there’s a sense of cautious optimism heading into the weekend, helped by Liverpool’s recent dip in form under Arne Slot.
After beginning the season with five straight league wins, Liverpool have since endured three consecutive defeats in all competitions — against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea. Both domestic losses came through late goals, while the European setback in Istanbul ended 1-0.
United, fresh from a confident 2-0 victory over Sunderland before the break, will be hoping that a strong performance at Anfield can provide the spark for a consistent run of results.
Amorim drops Lammens hint vs Liverpool
The 2-0 win over Sunderland two weeks ago saw goalkeeper Senne Lammens make a “very secure” and stable debut for the Reds, replacing Altay Bayındır in goal.
The 23-year-old was commanding in his box, made a few good saves, and caught several crosses. His performance was so well-received by the Old Trafford faithful that they jokingly chanted “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” in an ode to legendary shot-stopper Peter Schmeichel.
Amorim noted just how important Lammens’ first impression was, but warned United’s fans that the Belgian is still a young player with talent, rather than a finished article.
“First impression is really important, to maintain the level is even more important, really difficult,” Amorim told the press on Friday afternoon.
“He is not Schmeichel yet. He is a young guy with talent. He showed a lot of composure, and the fans liked it, but we need to prove in the next game.”
Amorim’s belief that Lammens and his team need to continue proving themselves against Liverpool suggests that the Portuguese manager has already decided his new goalkeeper will remain in position on Sunday afternoon.
Amorim has several selection headaches vs Liverpool
While Lammens’ selection seems an obvious and straightforward choice, there are other positions up for debate.
A few weeks ago, most would have assumed that Matheus Cunha would start on the left of Amorim’s front three at Anfield, but the brilliant performance from Mason Mount against Sunderland, including a well-taken goal, throws this into doubt.
Beyond this, Amorim will have to choose what type of defence he wants to lay out against Slot’s men on Sunday afternoon.
It’s expected that Luke Shaw will start on the left of the back three, but a choice must be made on whether Harry Maguire starts or not. Slot has recently admitted that his team struggle to defend and score set pieces, and Maguire’s presence in both areas will help lock that down.
However, with Liverpool’s front line containing quick, powerful, and tireless runners, it may instead be wiser to use Leny Yoro on the right of the back three, with Matthijs de Ligt in the midfield.
There are also rumours that Amorim is considering starting Manuel Ugarte over Casemiro at Anfield, although team news will not be confirmed until 75 minutes before the scheduled kick-off time.
