Ruben Amorim dig made as Man Utd given Michael Carrick advice by ex-Premier League boss

Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has advised Manchester United on what they should do regarding making Michael Carrick their permanent manager.

Following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, Manchester United filled their managerial vacancy with Michael Carrick on an interim basis.

This was seen as a stopgap for the Reds before they bring in a permanent replacement in the summer, although due to a scintillating start on the touchline, many fans are hoping for Carrick’s tenure to long continue.

The former United midfielder has won all three of his ties in the Premier League so far, against the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, and most recently, Fulham.

These results have left United fourth in the table, and now that there is much more optimism surrounding Old Trafford, there are conversations to be had regarding Carrick’s future.

Allardyce discusses Carrick possibility

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast via United in Focus, former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce discussed the possibility of Carrick becoming a permanent fixture on the Old Trafford touchline.

Alllardyce said, “Everybody wants him [Carrick]. Everybody. You know what I mean?

“But is it the right decision? That’s the biggest. The board are under so much pressure now again. They’re under so much pressure given the job given to them. Is it the right thing to do?

“So, they’ve got to be calculated as cruel, if you like. Probably the wrong word, cruel. But you’ve got to make sure that your next choice is not built on heart. It’s not from the heart. It’s from the mind.”

Allardyce makes Amorim slight

The 71-year-old then went on to speak on United’s former manager, Amorim, stating that the Portuguese tactician didn’t have what it took to handle the pressure of being the United boss.

“Is it the right thing to do? Because Amorim couldn’t handle Man United for me,” he continued. “So, that’s why it’s a special sort of internal desire as a player and as the manager to survive at Man United and then become successful.

“So, you need to learn to live with it and flourish from it, not shrivel and end up getting sold on or losing your job as the manager.”

To sort of use Allardyce’s own words against him, you would assume that, if anybody is to understand the pressure that comes with being on the United touchline, it would be someone, such as Carrick, who has spent so many years at the club.

Only time will tell whether Carrick’s success is due to a classic case of ‘new manager bounce’ or if he truly has what it takes to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford, but luckily for United, time is on their side regarding a decision.
