Manchester United completed two signings for Ruben Amorim’s squad during the January transfer window this year.

Ruben Amorim clearly needed reinforcements for his Manchester United squad heading into the January transfer window.

The most pressing issue was at wingback, with United’s current options leaving a lot to be desired in the position.

Patrick Dorgu has signed for the club for a reported £25 million fee and will likely start at left-wingback in Amorim’s strongest team.

Meanwhile, the club also secured the signing of left-sided central defender Ayden Heaven, who could end up being an important addition after Lisandro Martínez tore his anterior cruciate ligament.

However, after letting the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony leave the club on loan, it was expected that a forward would be signed on loan.

Mathys Tel agreed to join the club but an agreement could not be reached with Bayern Munich and Tel ended up producing a u-turn and signed on loan for Tottenham Hotspur after rejecting them earlier in the window.

United’s attacking depth going into the second half of the season includes Amad, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee – while Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes can also play in the no.10 positions.

Amorim’s assessment on United January transfers

Amorim told the media throughout January that the club had to be smart in their transfer dealings, avoiding the mistakes of the past by signing the wrong players.

Despite the lack of forward signing, it has been claimed by the Manchester Evening News that the hierarchy and Amorim are pleased with the winter business.

It was added that Diego Leon, Dorgu and Heaven are viewed as high-potential recruits for the long-term who have not commanded high fees.

Left-back Leon also signed for the club this window but will not officially join the club until the summer after he turns 18.

Wingbacks the key for United in second half of the season

It seems comical that United are entering the second half of the season with the offensive depth that they are. Any injuries in the coming months could make things go from bad to ugly at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s most difficult job is to find ways to make this team score more goals.

Although, it isn’t necessarily an issue that any random striker signing would have solved, with the service to the centre-forward being one of the biggest issues in recent months.

Dorgu will hopefully provide much-needed attacking quality from the left while Amad should be playing more as a wingback on the right too.

Getting the wide players in Amorim’s system to improve could be the best way for United to create more chances and start scoring more goals without any more recruits, although it still looks like an extremely difficult task.
