Rúben Amorim delighted at “very good” star’s display vs Sunderland, Man Utd have “really missed him” of late

Rúben Amorim has highlighted one Manchester United star’s performance against Sunderland and spoke on his importance to the side.

Rúben Amorim handed Senne Lammens his debut in goal as Manchester United faced Sunderland in a rain-soaked Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

United began brightly and quickly seized control of the contest. Their early pressure paid off when Mason Mount showed great composure, taking a neat touch before finishing clinically to give the hosts the lead. Amorim’s side continued to dominate possession, but Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced several impressive saves to keep his team in the game.

Just past the half-hour mark, Benjamin Šeško doubled United’s advantage with a close-range finish. Sunderland believed they had a route back into the match shortly before the interval after being awarded a penalty, but the decision was overturned following an on-field review.

The second half proved more evenly contested as both sides fought for control. Amorim introduced Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Matheus Cunha to inject fresh energy down the left flank, yet despite sustained pressure, a third goal eluded United.

Strong defensive performances from Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw, coupled with a confident late save from debutant Lammens, ensured United secured their first clean sheet of the season and collected three valuable Premier League points.

Amorim impressed by Amad’s performance

Amad didn’t make the trip last weekend for United’s loss to Brentford following a family bereavement, with Amorim speaking after the defeat about how much they missed the Ivorian winger.

Back in the squad against Sunderland, one of the club’s standout players from last season once again showed his value in Amorim’s side, with the Portuguese manager speaking on his performance after the win.

He said: “Really pleased, really pleased. I think he defended really well. Attacking, we already know that he’s very good. Every time he has the ball one against one, he’s giving us a lot of chances to score.

“He can help Bryan to play more inside and worry more with the runs behind the defenders. We miss a lot Amad against Brentford, especially when we’re [in the] second half, 2-1, to have an extra guy like Amad, it’s massive. So, we are really pleased with him. He did a very good job.”

Amad linking up well with Mbeumo

Amad has endured a tough start to the season, and with just one assist in the league after the opening five games, many were criticising him for his slow start to the season.

Prominently featuring further forward last campaign, the arrival of Mbeumo has meant that he has seen the majority of his minutes come from right wing-back.

Despite both of the right-sided players being attacking-minded, they displayed a great partnership against Sunderland, with the two offering several good off-the-ball runs to one another during the game.

Amorim will be encouraged to see the attack starting to gel after a complete overhaul of his forward line during the summer.
