Rúben Amorim could look to the free agent market next summer with an iconic striker to bolster the forward line and help mentor Benjamin Šeško.
Since signing in the summer for £72.5 million, Benjamin Šeško has gradually begun to adjust to life in the Premier League. With two goals in his last three games, as well as showing clear technical ability, it seems Manchester United have the striker figurehead that they so dearly lacked last season.
Despite this, Rúben Amorim’s side are still in need of more goals throughout the squad. The Red Devils are level with Brentford with 11 goals in the league so far, ranking ninth in the league.
Joshua Zirkzee is seemingly out of the picture with only 74 minutes of action in the league this season. United would want to avoid a situation similar to last campaign, where at times only one striker had to shoulder the burden every week.
Next summer, Amorim may look to bring in another proven goalscorer who will also guide Šeško. Similar to when Zlatan Ibrahimović and Edinson Cavani mentored the likes of Marcus Rashford during their time at Old Trafford.
United could make a move for Lewandowski
United have spent over £150 million over the last three years trying to find the perfect striker with varying degrees of success. United need to become shrewd in the market in their search for more forward depth as INEOS look to spend heavily on the midfield.
Looking at potential free agent options next summer may be a cost-effective way of doing this. As with every year, there are always big names available, but none more than this year.
Robert Lewandowski could prove to be a sensational move for Amorim. The Poland international’s contract is set to expire next summer, with Barcelona yet to activate their extension option. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has also expressed doubts over the striker’s ability to play in his high press.
Despite the doubts, Lewandowski has still enjoyed a bright start to the season, scoring four goals in seven games, although he has often had to look on from the bench with Ferran Torres starting through the middle.
Reports from the Daily Star suggest that the Catalan side could be looking to start afresh without Lewandowski, and that United could potentially target him.
The perfect mentor for Šeško
While Šeško has performed well so far this season, it is important to remember his still young and his talent is raw. This season would be his third season of football in a top-five league.
No doubt he has the potential and ability to lead the line for United, but it is key to remember the way Rasmus Højlund was run into the ground, being the only option up front.
With over 700 career goals, Lewandowski has bags of experience in the biggest moments of football. Despite being 37 years old, he has only scored under 20 goals in the league once since turning 30.
Being able to pick the brains of one of the greatest strikers of the 21st century would be invaluable not only to Šeško but all the attacking options at the club, including young Chido Obi. Learning how he moves into the box and always sniffs out a goal would elevate the young Slovenian’s game massively.
Amorim needs more goal-scoring options throughout the squad. While it would only be short-term, it would greatly improve the club’s chances of getting back into Europe by having a forward line that consistently scores goals.
