Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim could give three players their Premier League debuts on Sunday afternoon against Wolves.
On Thursday evening, Manchester United pulled off a stunning comeback against Lyon in a match for the ages as they progressed to the semi-finals of the Europa League.
After going 2-0 up through Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, United let their lead slip with two poor second-half goals. Despite Tolisso’s red card, Lyon went ahead in extra time with goals from Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette, the latter converting a penalty after Shaw’s foul.
With six minutes left, Bruno Fernandes made it 4-3 from the spot after Casemiro was fouled. Kobbie Mainoo then equalised in the 120th minute thanks to a clever flick from Casemiro, who moments later crossed for Harry Maguire to head in the dramatic winner.
United’s semi-final clashes against Athletic Club come at the beginning of next month but there are several Premier League games between now and then.
Amorim could give three United debuts vs Wolves
Despite previously stating the importance of staying competitive in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim admitted on Thursday that he will need to take “risks” with young players so he can focus on the Europa League.
United have gone to extra time three times so far this season and the latest game would have taken a lot out of many of the starters. Even Fernandes looked jaded in that clash.
Amorim could give several youngsters an opportunity to impress against Wolves on the weekend. Players like Harry Amass and Chido Obi will likely play a part while others could be gifted the chance to make their debuts.
Dalot has been playing every game for United for what feels to be a century. He will likely be one of those afforded a rest after playing 120 minutes and Jaydan Kamason could come into the side.
Kamason was on the bench against Lyon and has been in and around the first-team squad in recent weeks. The right-back has shown attacking prowess on the flank in the Academy and may be able to show United fans what he’s all about.
Jack Moorhouse is another young Red who is clearly impressing Amorim as he was in the matchday squad against Lyon and has been on the bench four times now for the first-team.
The attacking midfielder might not start the game against Wolves but could easily make an appearance off the bench and many supporters are eager to see him in action after some brilliant performances in the youth teams.
Finally, with limited options at the back, Godwill Kukonki may also finally make his first senior appearance after being the first youngster to properly impress Amorim earlier in the season.
Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire both played 120 minutes against Lyon while Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelof had to leave the stadium at half-time due to personal emergencies. A spot could be there for Kukonki to play in the back three.
United youngsters can show if they’re ready for next season
United fans are not expecting much in the Premier League and the emergence of some extra youngsters will likely provide them with more excitement than anything else.
The Europa League is getting serious now and there are just three games between United and cup glory once again.
Realistically, Amorim and his side cannot let that bonkers win over Lyon go to waste – just like they didn’t when they stunned Liverpool in the FA Cup last season.
Allowing these young stars to make an impression in the Premier League will help showcase if any of them are ready for the step up next season and also afford some crucial rest to some of the senior players in the squad.
