Ruben Amorim could be set for an immediate return to the touchline following his recent sacking from Manchester United. Jose Mourinho holds the keys.
Portuguese tactician Ruben Amorim was sacked from Manchester United, following an explosive press conference in which he labelled a sense of entitlement within the club.
This press conference brought Amorim’s 14-month stint as the United manager to an end, and in his place stepped former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who has taken over temporarily.
Fletcher’s first fixture in charge of the Reds was a Premier League clash against 18th-placed Burnley, where a Benjamin Šeško brace secured a point for his side.
Having only been dismissed from Old Trafford a matter of days ago, Amorim could already be lined up for a new managerial job, although Jose Mourinho stands in his way.
Mourinho holds the keys
Having left Sporting CP to join the Red Devils, Amorim could be set to move back to Portugal if Jose Mourinho is to depart from Sporting’s bitter rivals, SL Benfica, in the near future.
As reported by TalkSPORT, it is understood that the Portuguese tactician is a strong contender to replace Mourinho at the Estadio da Luz.
Mourinho penned a two-year deal at Benfica in September; however, his future at the club is already in question due to a break clause in his contract this summer.
This break clause is in place as he could be in line to become Portugal’s national team manager after the 2026 World Cup if Roberto Martinez was to be replaced.
Amorim’s return to Benfica
Benfica would seemingly be a great opportunity for Amorim to return to life as a manager, especially considering his lengthy history with the club during his playing days.
The 40-year-old was on Benfica’s books from 2008 to 2017, in which time he helped the Eagles to three Primeira Liga titles, one Taca de Portugal cup, three Taca de Liga’s and one Portuguese Super Cup.
It was also reported by TalkSPORT in September that Amorim was on the radar of the Eagles before the eventual appointment of Mourinho.
Joao Noronha Lopes, who at the time was a candidate to be the next president for Benfica, even went as far as saying, “One thing I know, Ruben Amorim will be the coach of Benfica one day.”
