Ruben Amorim confirms Man Utd suspicion with Carabao Cup comment, it’s completely different to Erik ten Hag
Ruben Amorim has named his Manchester United side to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup and it confirms some recent suspicions.
After their thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Manchester City at the weekend, Manchester United now shift focus to the Carabao Cup.
The Reds have been in scintillating form in the competition this season, netting seven goals in the third round against Barnsley and five more against Leicester City in the fourth.
Next, Ruben Amorim’s side face a challenging quarter-final away fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.
The winner of this clash will advance to the semi-finals, where they will take on Arsenal, Newcastle, or Liverpool. United will be aiming to secure silverware for a third consecutive season, a feat they last achieved between 2009 and 2011.
However, the 39-year-old head coach decided against choosing a strong team for the tie and rotated once again.
His starting XI included players like Antony, Victor Lindelöf and Christian Eriksen and many believe it was a display of Amorim showing that he is prioritising the Premier League.
Amorim confirms Man Utd suspicion with Carabao Cup comment
The United boss essentially confirmed those suspicions with his comments ahead of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“Our club demands every title but in my head is the Premier League,” admitted Ruben Amorim when speaking to Sky Sports.
“The trophy we want to win in the future is the Premier League, and that’s on my mind.
“Everything is important at this club. We have to win every game. We could do it [win the Carabao Cup] or not but our focus is always winning games.”
United currently sit 13th in the league standings but are just six points away from Nottingham Forest in fourth place.
Finishing in the Champions League spots would be a difficult task this season but would certainly help United’s financial situation and ability to sign players in the summer.
Ten Hag had completely different approach to Amorim
The comments and approach from Amorim are in complete contrast to Erik ten Hag’s approach at Old Trafford beforehand.
United’s ex-manager consistently fielded stronger teams in the cup competitions and got his rewards by winning the 2023 Carabao Cup and 2024 FA Cup.
However, the team also never really managed to find consistent form in the Premier League under the Dutch manager.
That was partly due to injuries, which many believed were a cause of the lack of rotation under Ten Hag.
Amorim will be hoping that his approach will yield stronger performances and results over the long-term in the league.
