Ruben Amorim has completely agreed with Rio Ferdinand about a very talented member of his Manchester United squad.
After an impressive unbeaten pre-season, Manchester United now gear up for a blockbuster Premier League curtain-raiser against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, 17 August.
Ruben Amorim’s squad know they must start sharply as Mikel Arteta’s disciplined Arsenal head north for a high-profile clash filled with new arrivals, big talking points and early pressure.
While the United boss will be hoping that the new signings – Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško – can add a spark to the team, he will also be looking for improvements across the squad.
There are plenty of players who have looked ready to go during pre-season, with Leny Yoro being one of those top performers in the summer.
Amorim says United star can become “one of the best in the world”
Yoro has not only looked solid in pre-season but the young Frenchman was one of the few United players who could hold their head high with their displays from last season.
Even still, the 19-year-old is looking for improvement and that is exactly what Amorim is expecting too.
The United boss has thrown huge praise Yoro’s way this week, claiming that he has the potential to become ‘one of the best centre-backs in the world’.
He also highlighted how Yoro has improved physically since joining the club, both in settled play and during set-pieces.
“I think he can be one of the best centre-backs in the world,” Amorim said when asked about Yoro’s potential on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel.
“He’s improved a lot, even the physicality, he struggled a little bit in the physicality [in the beginning] but you can see in the small things he is stronger.
“Even in set-pieces, he’s getting the ball quite a lot, so he’s going to play better this season.”
Ferdinand made same Yoro assessment
Amorim is not the first to suggest that Yoro could become one of the best defenders in the world. He would agree with Rio Ferdinand, who made a similar assessment last year.
The United legend explained how William Saliba and Yoro are the two defenders who could take Virgil van Dijk’s place as the best centre-back in the world. He also described the Frenchman as a ‘fantastic’ talent during pre-season.
“I think he’ll grow,” Ferdinand told MUTV. “Leny Yoro, I think, is a fantastic talent. The prospects, the talent, isn’t a question. It’s about fulfilling that talent, that potential, and I think he’s a serious person, works hard.”
United supporters know all about Yoro’s talent and will be hoping that he fulfils this talent at Old Trafford in the coming years.
It certainly looks like he’s ready to take his game to the next level for the upcoming campaign.
