Rúben Amorim changes plan for promising Manchester United youngster after pre-season performances

Rúben Amorim has decided to keep talented youngster among the first team squad, despite the under-21s kicking off their National League Cup campaign.

Travis Binnion’s under-21s travelled to Brackley yesterday as they played the first match in their National League Cup campaign, losing 2-1.

The academy’s top talents fought valiantly, with Chido Obi and Bendito Mantato among the ranks, and Jacob Devaney scoring the Reds’ only goal late in the game.

Manchester United’s next generation of players have been impressing, and a few were excluded from yesterday’s match to continue their training with the senior squad.

One particular youth player has been retained by Rúben Amorim, as the Portuguese manager hopes to provide a pathway into the first team.

Leon to feature in the first team

Summer signing Diego Leon was on the bench for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and has been training with the first team all summer.

It was unclear whether Leon would head directly into the academy when he joined the club this summer. With the Harry Amass situation, the club seemed to have favoured Leon in the current squad, as Amass heads out on loan.

The Paraguayan featured in numerous pre-season games and seems to be becoming a useful alternative to Patrick Dorgu.

Leon also appeared on the bench against Grimsby Town in a very disappointing cup exit, gaining some vital first-team experience.

Despite not making his competitive debut as of yet, Amorim seems to favour the potential of Leon and may look to utilise him soon.

Leon could make debut against Chelsea

BBC Sport has touted Leon as a key member of Amorim’s plans, saying: “Ruben Amorim has been keen to keep the youngster in his first-team training group.”

This Saturday, the Reds face Chelsea in a crucial Premier League fixture, and the side has been extremely unconvincing so far.

Amorim may be looking for a change in the starting eleven, and particularly at fullback, with Dorgu having a poor start to the season.

With Diogo Dalot out injured as well, this provides Leon with an exciting opportunity to make his competitive debut.

If Amorim decides to play Leon, the fans will anticipate a great debut at Old Trafford and will hope to see the start of a great career in Manchester.
