Rúben Amorim’s frosty reaction to Bruno Fernandes spotted after Wolves red card, he deserved it
Bruno Fernandes thoroughly deserved the reaction Rúben Amorim gave after the Manchester United captain was sent off against Wolves on Boxing Day.
Manchester United fell to their third defeat in a row as Rúben Amorim’s men lost 2-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Premier League Boxing Day fixture.
In the first half, although United created a few early chances through Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo, it was Wolves who generally looked the more comfortable and dominant side.
With the tie sat at 0-0 as the half-time whistle blew, the second half saw Bruno Fernandes sent off for a second yellow card within minutes of the restart, thrusting United into a whole new dynamic.
As has been the theme with United this season, the club conceded yet another set piece, with Matheus Cunha scoring directly from his corner kick just shy of 10 minutes after the red card.
United responded with multiple substitutions, and although they continued to look for an equaliser, Wolves continued to stay staunch in front of goal.
A late push from Amorim’s men saw them have a penalty shout as Harry Maguire was brought down in the area, but VAR denied the claim, and Hwang Hee-chan scored a second in extra time to seal a 2-0 win for the home team.
Amorim’s reaction to Fernandes’ red card
Fernandes was sent off early in the second half after he collected a silly yellow card for a foul on Nelson Semedo, having fouled Matheus Cunha in the first half.
Although the first card can be argued to be a little harsh, the second was entirely deserved, and had he not already been on a yellow, there is little doubt that VAR may have chosen to check if it should be changed to a straight red.
Although Fernandes protested, his efforts were, of course, in vein, although it’s more interesting that Amorim chose not to even register the 30-year-old as he walked off the field.
As spotted by journalist Steven Railston, Amorim completely ignored the captain as he exited the field, with the head coach clearly “not happy” with what happened.
Fernandes deserved Amorim’s frosty reaction
Fernandes can complain about the referee’s decision, but there is little doubt that he deserved his punishment. Even if the first yellow card was harsh, he should never have looked to make the second foul if he knew he was already in the book.
At that point in the game, Amorim had to think about how he could react to the decision, and speaking to Fernandes would have been of little consequence.

Although Amorim may have chosen to take a second to console the player if it was someone less experienced, the 39-year-old knows that someone such as his club captain should know better than to make such a challenge.
Fernandes deserved the frosty reaction of his coach and will miss the upcoming fixture against Newcastle. Manuel Ugarte will also be banned after he received his fifth yellow card of the season in the Premier League.
