Manchester United confirmed the signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce for a reported £25 million last week.

Patrick Dorgu, 20, has joined Manchester United as an immediate reinforcement for the left wingback position under Ruben Amorim.

This season, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, and Tyrell Malacia have all featured in the role, underscoring the need for an upgrade.

With his attacking mindset and knack for creating danger in the final third, Dorgu seems to be the perfect addition to United’s squad and will be eager to seize the opportunity.

The Danish international had made 23 appearances for Lecce this season before his transfer and played in a variety of positions, including left wingback and right wing.

He was not available for United’s defeat to Crystal Palace on the weekend but could make his debut in the FA Cup against Leicester City on Friday night.

Amorim breaks silence on Dorgu signing

Amorim has made it clear that he wanted the club to not make any mistakes in this transfer market in terms of incomings.

The Reds have wasted too much cash in recent years on signings who do not properly fit into the team. Dorgu, however, identifies a clear need for Amorim’s squad and is not overpriced.

Speaking to the media ahead of the game against Leicester City, the United boss was asked about the new signing at Old Trafford.

“You can say in the way that we play, with Dorgu we have one more winger to play in both sides,” he told journalists.

“But of course, he’s going to take time and he’s not going to solve all of the problems.”

When asked whether the 20-year-old or Ayden Heaven will play on Friday night, Amorim added: “We’ll see, you guys have to wait until tomorrow but they are ready to play and are two more solutions in this moment.”

Amorim’s true stance on United’s wingback role

Fans have been consistently getting frustrated with Amorim when he decides to play with two fullbacks in his starting team.

It has been something that clearly hasn’t worked at Old Trafford but it is clear that the head coach’s stance is similar to the supporters.

You can tell that by the fact that he has signed Dorgu and is targeting Geovany Quenda for the summer transfer window.

And it is also clear in his first comments on the Danish international, claiming that he is essentially considered as a winger in his system.

That has not been the case with the likes of Dalot or Mazraoui playing there but there will hopefully be developments in that aspect of the playstyle now that there is a more natural fit for the role.
