Rúben Amorim has opened up on the possibility of extending Casemiro’s Manchester United contract ahead of the club’s Premier League tie against Tottenham Hotspur.
Rúben Amorim’s side travel to North London on Saturday afternoon to face Tottenham Hotspur, aiming to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to five matches.
Manchester United have found their rhythm in recent weeks, securing wins over Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton, along with a draw against Nottingham Forest. Since their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in mid-September, they’ve lost only once.
Tottenham, led by Thomas Frank, are level on points with United but have struggled to impress at home this season. They’ve managed just one win from five home games — a 3-0 victory over Burnley — and most recently suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.
The two sides met four times last season, including in the Europa League final, with Spurs winning on each occasion. Amorim’s men will be keen to put that record right when they return to the capital this weekend.
Amorim presser
While there are a few starting XI changes that could be made ahead of the fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, one player who is almost certainly nailed on to start is Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.
Despite not initially being part of Amorim’s plans last year, the 33-year-old has fought his way to become an integral member of the side. Alongside Harry Maguire, his contract expires in the coming summer, with there being the possibility of an extension.
However, the Brazilian’s current deal sits as high as £300,000 a week, which United will want to cut in at least half if he is to stay at Old Trafford.
“We don’t know what is going to happen,” Amorim admitted when talking about possible extensions. “My goal is to continue to count with Casimiro with Harry Maguire, that he has the same the same problem
” I don’t know what is going to happen, but let’s focus on this season.
“I’m really happy with Casemiro. It’s really important. I’m really happy with Harry. But I know what you guys are asking. Let’s focus on this season, and then we’ll see in the next season.”
At least one of Maguire or Casemiro must stay
While United’s summer signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are two experienced forwards who can already hold their own at a club like United, the other two, Benjamin Šeško and Senne Lammens, are younger.

While keeping both Maguire and Casemiro on the books may be a stretch too far, considering that the duo earn as much as half a million a week combined, it would certainly be wise to keep at least one for the old heads to help younger players.
Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans have been regularly cited as crucial parts of the squad in helping nurture and guide younger stars at United. With Evans leaving last season, and Heaton expected to depart in June, the roles they have taken on suddenly open up.
Casemiro has been vocal in stating that he feels he still has a lot to give at the top level over the last year or so, while Maguire has made a point of claiming he doesn’t want to leave Old Trafford, so a tough decision could well come later this year.
