Rúben Amorim urged to avoid “crazy” decision vs Rangers that Manchester United fans are calling for
Rúben Amorim has been urged to stay away from making a “crazy” against Rangers that Manchester United fans have been calling for.
Manchester United are preparing to host Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday evening as they return to Europa League action.
The start of 2025 has been a mixed period for Rúben Amorim’s side. A hard-fought draw with Liverpool and a commanding victory over Arsenal gave fans hope, but that momentum was derailed by an unconvincing win against Southampton – despite Amad’s sensational hat-trick – and a deflating 3-1 defeat to Brighton.
The match against Rangers offers United a crucial opportunity to reset and put their campaign back on track. Entering as strong favourites, they’ll be eager to deliver a performance that restores belief among supporters.
Currently seventh in the Europa League standings – comfortably within the automatic qualification spots for the knockout stages – a victory would solidify their position and provide a timely boost to morale and momentum.
Amorim urged to stay clear of “crazy” decision
Against Brighton, André Onana found himself under fire after a horrid error led directly to the visitor’s final goal, with the Cameroon international spilling the ball straight into the path of Georginio Rutter, who duly dispatched the second-half chance.
Following this, reports have stated that Amorim is considering playing back-up shot-stopper Altay Bayındır over Onana, with the Turkish international having impressed by saving two penalties against Arsenal earlier this month.
However, former United defender Gary Pallister has warned Amorim against the move, stating that it would be “crazy” to field Bayındır over Onana just because of the former’s heroics against Arsenal.
“Altay Bayındır had a good game against Arsenal, but you’d be crazy to bring him in over André Onana on just that game, despite the penalty saves,” Pallister told punterslounge.
“André Onana is a good professional but the high profile blunders do stick in people’s minds. He is someone that people are very critical of but he has been in the large part very good this season.
“We can’t say that Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar never made mistakes can we, but when you get a reputation for it in the early part of your career at the club it can stick with you. It will take a lot of shifting to get that out of people’s minds.”
Fans calling for Bayındır to start vs Rangers
Despite Pallister’s words, many fans have been calling for Bayındır to play over Onana as they feel the 26-year-old deserves a genuine shot at playing for United more than just two or three times a season.

After a poor performance against Tottenham in December, many thought that Bayındır was not good enough, but considering his heroics against Arsenal, some have changed their minds.
Bayındır released a graphic on Instagram this morning celebrating the fact that it’s matchday for United, leading many to believe he is in line to start in goal.
There is little doubt that Bayındır is a top goalkeeper but is less proficient with the ball at his feet than Onana, which has led both Erik ten Hag and Amorim to favour the latter so far.
