Rúben Amorim must trial one of his Manchester United stars in a new position against FCSB that some fans feel is his “destiny” at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are set to conclude their Europa League group stage campaign with a trip to Romania to face FCSB on Thursday evening.

After a slow start to the competition, with three consecutive draws, United have found their form, winning their last four matches. This impressive run has seen them climb from 21st to 4th in the standings, as Rúben Amorim aims to secure his first piece of silverware with the club.

United’s most recent European success came against Rangers, followed by a 1-0 Premier League victory over Fulham. They have now won four of their six matches in 2025, but the challenge of FCSB, who are fighting for their place in the knockout stages, cannot be underestimated.

FCSB currently sit 8th in the standings and must win to stay in the top eight, which guarantees automatic progression to the next round.

Teams finishing between 9th and 24th will face a two-legged play-off, while the bottom eight will be eliminated from the competition entirely.

Amorim must play Mainoo in a new position

Kobbie Mainoo has started seven of Amorim’s last ten fixtures but has only completed 90 minutes on one occasion, with some feeling that he and Manuel Ugarte are not athletic enough as a duo to cover the ground needed in the middle of the park.

Mainoo has played just 25 minutes across United’s last two games, coming off the bench in the closing stages against Rangers and Fulham, but after his cameo on the weekend, fans have been calling for him to be trialled in a new position.

The 19-year-old came in to replace Alejandro Garnacho as the left-sided No. 10, with Amad his counterpart on the right, and the duo combined to score a fantastic goal in extra time, although it was chalked off for a debatable offside.

Those who have watched Mainoo since his days in the Academy have explained that he has often been more suited to attacking roles as opposed to the deeper position he has played so far under Amorim, with the England international having played as an attacking midfielder, winger, and striker.

Amorim has played both Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes in that left No. 10 position across the last few months, but the upcoming Europa League clash represents the perfect clash to see what Mainoo could do.

As mentioned above, Mainoo’s role as a No. 10 in this system may be his destiny. Garnacho may be rested by Amorim, having played two fixtures in a row, while the head coach likes to play Fernandes in a deeper role during games where United may have more possession.

Therefore, Mainoo could be the obvious choice to play in the left position, with Rashford still not considered for selection by Amorim.

Although we only caught a glimpse of how he could perform there, Mainoo’s cameo against Fulham has shown enough that it’s an option worth exploring from Amorim.
