Roy Keane believes that Manchester United need to move on from goalkeeper David de Gea, whose contract runs out in less than two weeks.

The former United captain has previously stated on numerous occasions that he thinks an upgrade between the sticks is necessary if Erik ten Hag’s men are going to continue their upwards trajectory.

“I’d move him on quickly, he’s not for me, he’s not going to get Man United back winning trophies, absolutely not,” he said after United’s final Premier League game of the season.

After the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, Keane added: “They need a world-class goalkeeper and he isn’t. We will keep talking about it. Some of these players aren’t good enough for United. They have to spend the money to get the players United deserve.”

And while at the time of those comments it seemed that a contract extension would be agreed upon for De Gea, it now looks like the Spaniard could be moving on from Old Trafford after his current deal expires on 30 June.

The latest reports from several outlets have suggested that United are less confident than they were several weeks ago that an agreement would be made with the shot-stopper.

Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail has reported that Ten Hag is unconvinced about keeping De Gea as number one and has reservations about keeping him beyond the end of the month.

The likes of Andre Onana and Diogo Costa have been said to be prime targets if the club are to replace their goalkeeper. Both Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions activated on their deals which suggests that United could be expecting a change in their no.1.

Onana’s performance in the Champions League final against Manchester City perhaps showed that De Gea is lacking in several areas which are needed for a top goalkeeper now.

De Gea was signed at Old Trafford in the summer of 2011 and has made 545 appearances for the club, keeping 190 clean sheets in that time.
