Ruben Amorim’s decision to utilise new Manchester United signing Patrick Dorgu on the right side of the defence has been questioned by Roy Keane.

Dorgu, 20, arrived as United’s big signing of the winter transfer window, with the expectation being that he would be used as a left wing-back.

Yet, when making his debut against Leicester in the FA Cup on Friday, Dorgu was used on the right, before being substituted at half-time by Amorim.

Dorgu, who did impress in his limited minutes against Leicester, is currently the only fit left-back at the club, yet was used on the opposing side. Fellow defender Luke Shaw had a recent injury setback, whilst Tyrell Malacia was sent out on loan to Dutch side PSV.

A fair criticism of Amorim?

At the end of last month, Amorim admitted to members of the media that he will, “Need time to work with players on what is their best position.”

As a result of this, players such as Kobbie Mainoo and Amad have been used in a variety of positions. Whilst, recent signing Leny Yoro would be used on both the right and left side of Amorim’s centre-back trio.

Discussing Amorim’s unpredictability when it comes to team selection, Roy Keane would suggest that some decisions made were not fair on the Portuguese manager’s squad:

“They bring new players in, and you think he’s going to play left wing-back but he’s playing right wing-back. Is that fair on other players?”

Keane’s ‘Liverpool’ advice for the United team

Though a lack of clarity over starting positions is one concern of Keane’s, the former Man United captain has spotted other issues within the team.

Under Amorim, United have scored 31 goals in 20 games, but Keane believes this could be improved if more players attempted to attack the box.

“You have to get bodies in the box,” Keane said when covering the Leicester game. “You see Liverpool at the moment, Liverpool are getting four, five, six bodies in the box. We’ve seen United a couple of times, balls going in and one or two [players are in the box], the fans are frustrated.

“Whereas towards the end, we’ve seen them in a panic then they started getting bodies in the box, taking gambles. To play at Man United you’ve gotta gamble. You’ve gotta try and win football matches.”
