Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has shared his thoughts on one United star returning to the limelight under the club’s new boss.
Manchester United have recently appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager for the remainder of this year’s campaign, and so far, the 44-year-old has done nothing but impress.
Carrick has won both fixtures he’s been in the dugout for, an impressive 2-0 derby day win, as well as a 3-2 victory over Arsenal that sent shockwaves through the Premier League. This has meant that fans have accepted the ex-midfeilders return to Old Trafford with open arms.
Carrick managed to get United back to their winning ways, with the Reds climbing their way up to fourth in the Premier League standings ahead of their upcoming game against Fulham this weekend.
However, the Englishman has not only managed this, but he’s worked to repair relationships with players that former head coach Ruben Amorim may have tainted.
Mainoo’s back in the spotlight
Academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo impressed in his debut season for the club; however, when Amorim took the wheel, his minutes started to decrease, struggling to keep up his status for the Reds.
The 20-year-old only made one start under Amorim this season, but this has all changed under Carrick, with the midfielder back where he belongs, appearing in the starting 11 in both fixtures so far.
Mainoo was welcomed back to the pitch in Carrick’s first game as United head coach as they netted 2-0 past Pep Guadialo’s side.
The England international played the full 90 minutes alongside Brazilian teammate Casemiro, the two-man pivot proving successful for both Mainoo and Carrick, fans overjoyed to see the youngster back in the side.
Keane on Mainoo’s return
Carrick’s tactics seem to be working. Mainoo played alongside Casemiro once again in United’s 3-2 win over Mikel Arteta’s side, with Mainoo stunning the Emirates as he bagged an assist for the winning goal.
The midfielder’s return to the pitch has caught the eyes of several English football pundits, with former United captain Roy Keane being one of many to share his opinion on Mainoo’s return.
Keane stated, “Bring Mainoo back in, we’re talking about six, seven weeks, so Mainoo should leave Man United,” he said.
“He goes, no, bide your time, you might get that chance. But when you get the chance, what he has done.”

The Sky Sports pundit added: “But what he’s done Gary, with Mainoo, we obviously in football, you get opportunities, but you’ve got to take it.
“[A] Man City home derby game, big game for United, Arsenal away, Arsenal have gone really well. So, you couldn’t ask for any more.
“Absolutely. It’s been brilliant.”
