Roy Keane identifies Man United position change that would benefit two starlets
Roy Keane has identified a position change at Manchester United that would benefit two young starlets.
The Reds have had a difficult start to the Premier League season, winning just one of their opening three games.
Casemiro has been criticised after his latest performance against Liverpool, and many expect him to be dropped once Manuel Ugarte is up to speed.
However, club legend Roy Keane does not think that the Brazilian should be written off and suggests that he could be in line for a position change to the no.8 instead of the no.6.
“I wouldn’t be writing him off yet,” Keane said on Stick to Football. “His role in the team, if he gets back in and a couple of games under his belt, might be a bit higher up the pitch.
“The first thing we always say is, ‘he can’t get around the pitch’. But what we’ve seen going forward, he does have an eye for a pass. Set-pieces, how many times does he get his head on it?”
This would, firstly, allow Kobbie Mainoo to have more rest, which seems necessary after the teenager’s intense first ten months of professional football.
Mainoo has quickly become one of United and England’s best players and is now a regular for both teams. He will need more rest this season, and Casemiro playing in the no.8 could be a solution.
This, in turn, could provide more opportunities for Toby Collyer in the first team as well.
Collyer made his Premier League debut against Liverpool and provided a decent display considering the circumstances he was thrown into.
With Casemiro potentially playing slightly higher, Collyer could prove himself to be the first reserve in the deeper midfield role behind Ugarte.
The new signing will not be able to start every game this season, and so Collyer would get chances to prove himself in the team.
