Roy Keane and Ange Postecoglou agree on specific Kobbie Mainoo point, Gareth Southgate must listen
Roy Keane and Ange Postecoglou have agreed on a specific point in relation to England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
Gareth Southgate has failed to find his midfield rhythm at Euro 2024. The Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment fell flat and Conor Gallagher was poor in the first half against Slovenia.
Mainoo finally came into the team for the second half of England’s final group game, and immediately, there were improvements.
The United midfielder created several chances in the final third, including the best opportunity in the final moment of the game.
Southgate has been wary of putting Mainoo into the team due to his age and lack of experience, although both Roy Keane and Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou have suggested otherwise.
The pair were on punditry duty for ITV and they believe that, in certain instances, a manager must trust the youth and not be afraid of putting them in.
“It’s a tough one with young players. Your nature as a coach is to try and ease them into things,” Postecoglou began.=
“But every now and then, there’s a young player that comes along and they’re just bashing the door down and you’ve just got to let them through.”
Keane added: “I think by the end of that game… we’d all be surprised if Mainoo doesn’t start the next game. Again, you throw a player in and the players ultimately pick the team.
“They’re struggling to get that flow in the game, a couple of clean sheets and a couple of young players came on tonight, and maybe that’s the way to go.
“As we know, I always say with young players, they’ve got no fear. Just go with them sometimes.”
