“I don’t understand…” Roy Keane agrees as Rúben Amorim rips into Manchester United stars vs Leicester City
Roy Keane has agreed as Rúben Amorim rips into his Manchester United players despite their 2-1 win over Leicester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Manchester United are through to the FA Cup fifth round after Harry Maguire’s stoppage-time header sealed a dramatic victory over Leicester City on Friday night.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s visitors set up to frustrate United in the early stages, absorbing pressure well and limiting clear-cut chances. Despite United beginning to assert themselves, it was Leicester who took the lead just before the break, as Bobby De Cordova-Reid capitalised on a rare opening. Amorim’s side, meanwhile, failed to register a shot on target in the first half.
Rúben Amorim responded with attacking changes after the interval, introducing Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee. Garnacho came closest to making an immediate impact, only to see his shot cleared off the line, which sparked life into the Old Trafford crowd.
The breakthrough finally arrived when a deflected Rasmus Højlund effort fell perfectly for Zirkzee, who slotted home the equaliser.
With United piling on the pressure in the final moments, their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time. Bruno Fernandes produced a sublime free kick, delivering an inch-perfect cross into the box, where Maguire powered home a towering header to complete the comeback and send United through.
Amorim rips into United’s lack of energy
Speaking after the result, Amorim was very solemn in his post-match interview with ITV, where he ripped into his United team by explaining that he was very unhappy with his team’s lack of energy int he first half.
“We had to believe until the end but this game has nothing to do with the time of Fergie,” the United boss explained. “I think the performance, we have to do so much better with the ball, without the ball.
“We didn’t have any energy in the beginning, especially in the first-half. Then in the second half we played a little bit better, with a little more speed, winning second balls.
“Then we managed to turn things around so it was a good result not a good performance.”
Keane agrees with Amorim’s frank assessment
Amorim’s frank and blunt assessment was spot on – it took until the second half for United to kick into gear, and it was only once Zirkzee scored that they looked like they believed they could win.
Speaking to ITV after the game, former Reds captain Roy Keane agreed with Amorim’s blasting of United’s players as he explained he could not understand why the team had no energy.
“The manager, he’s obviously really frustrated,” Keane started. “He’s frustrated with the performance, and he mentioned there about having no energy. That’s the bit I don’t understand.
“Whatever about the tactics and players trying to settle in and lack of confidence and lack of goal, you’ve got to play with energy.
“Your starting point’s got to be energy and enthusiasm, and then you take it from there. But if you’ve no energy, it doesn’t matter what system you’re playing. You won’t get near anybody. He said, obviously, in possession, out of possession. That stamina on this team…
“It’s well and good playing in possession, but you’ve got to close people down. We saw Leicester were getting plenty of joy there today. A really good team. We saw two bad teams out there today, basically.
“But any team with a bit more quality than Leicester obviously would have got the job done. Again, United are all there, look, and he’s clearly frustrated with the performance.”
