“Room for improvement…” – Honest Matheus Cunha assessment delivered by ex-Manchester United defender

Matheus Cunha signed for Manchester United in the summer transfer window and a former defender for the club has issued an honest assessment on his start to the season.

Manchester United have endured a mixed start to the season, currently sitting 10th in the Premier League after seven matches.

They’ve suffered defeats to Arsenal, Manchester City, and Brentford, while recording wins over Chelsea, Sunderland, and Burnley. Their meeting with Fulham ended in a draw.

Ruben Amorim’s team have displayed both encouraging signs and concerning flaws in their performances, but many supporters feel the level of progress has fallen short of expectations.

Matheus Cunha was one of the standout performers for United in their opening games but injury interrupted his flow and he will be aiming to improve after the international break.

Honest Cunha assessment delivered by ex-United defender

United fans have been delighted by the impact of Bryan Mbeumo but it always seemed like Cunha would be the standout summer signing for many fans just because of the type of player he is.

But the Brazilian is still yet to score his first goal for the club and Mason Mount took his place in the lineup last time out.

Rafael Da Silva, ex-United and Brazil defender, has offered his honest opinion on Cunha’s start to life at Old Trafford and suggested patience will be needed.

“Matheus Cunha, of course, hasn’t been doing great, but honestly, everyone at Manchester isn’t delivering, from the coach to the last player. Better performances, better results,” he told Aceodds.com.

“It’s too early to talk about Matheus Cunha; I really like him as a player, I think he’s fantastic, but along with all the other players, I think there’s room for improvement.

“It’s a thing that’s connected to him as it is to everyone else. I think everyone needs to know they have to improve, including Ruben Amorim. That’s important; I think it’s everyone together. There’s no point in blaming each other; that’s what’s bad, and it’s too easy.”

Cunha will get his chance to shine

Cunha is an extremely exciting player and it does feel like he simply needs more game-time for things to click but the performances of Mount could mean that takes slightly longer than initially expected.

The English midfielder does not have the power or flair of Cunha but looks to be a crucial part to making Amorim’s system better.

It would not be entirely surprising if Cunha is rotated with Benjamin Šeško upfront at times to give the Brazilian more game-time without taking Mount out of the team.

Although, as we all know, Mount has had injury problems and while he will be hoping to avoid any serious setbacks this term, it would not be entirely surprising.

Cunha will get more than enough time on the pitch and he will be eager to showcase his best levels once club football returns after the international break.
