Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that the club must sell three particular players before the January transfer window ends.

Manchester United are in desperate need of signings to help Ruben Amorim but the club need departures in order to bring players in.

A host of players have been linked with exits from Old Trafford this month but nothing has materialised so far.

United are in poor form and need every player focused on improving the situation and learning Amorim’s system inside-out.

Ferdinand urges United to sell three players

However, that is also hard to do when plenty of players are unaware of their future beyond January and are open to leaving the club.

Among those is Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia and Antony – all three players are open to leaving United this month.

Former Red Rio Ferdinand believes that the club have to make these sales as soon as possible. He explains that keeping such players around, who don’t want to be there, creates a “bad energy” within the group.

When asked about those three players, Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel: “I think Antony’s going, someone said to me, Real Betis or somewhere like that. Just get them out man!

“Sorry, no, I’m just being honest. The more these type of guys are around, where there’s just a bad noise, they all want to go, they’re all happy to go – let’s just get them out. Let’s start afresh.

“You know what it’s like, if there’s people who are unsettled in there and it’s not going to plan and they’re not happy, it spreads. It’s like a cancerous, bad energy.”

Ferdinand is right but United are at fault

It’s hard to not agree with the point Ferdinand is making and it doesn’t just apply to those players.

It isn’t really their fault either considering it is the club who have essentially put them all in the shop window.

United are desperate for cash but these players needed to be sold or loaned towards the start of the window because the noise around them, especially Rashford, is not helping whatsoever.

You cannot expect to say “everyone is for sale, we’re being ruthless” and then have no confirmed deals 20 days into the window. It seems like it has only built an uncertainty that isn’t needed at Old Trafford right now.

Perhaps, on the flip side, we also have to recognise how difficult it may be to get good deals done for these players – let’s wait and see whether they actually end up making those goos deals.
