Rio Ferdinand thinks Manchester United are making ‘fundamental’ error with new signing, it must be changed

Rio Ferdinand has shared his thoughts on one Manchester United summer signing, explaining how they are making a ‘fundamental’ mistake that needs to be corrected.

Manchester United’s start to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign hasn’t gone as many had hoped, with Ruben Amorim’s side only picking up one point from their first two games.

The Reds have scored one goal across these two fixtures, which came from a Leny Yoro header being heavily deflected by Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz.

Despite both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo being flung into the side from the off, their third attacking signing of the summer has had to settle for two substitute cameos so far.

Benjamin Šeško arrived at the club only a few days before the season began, but has been left out of the starting XI for both fixtures so far, with Mason Mount starting ahead of the Slovenian.

Ferdinand concerned about Šeško plan

On his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand spoke about Sesko and criticised his former club for failing to help the new forward to find his feet, explaining that this is fundamental error that must be fixed.

“Get the ball into him,” Ferdinand said. “He isn’t going to be an easy day’s work. Get it into him and make them defend. But we are playing it around him. Sometimes it’s like really basic, fundamental things.

“Get it into someone who can cause problems, but we go against that. So that was my main concern, you are not getting to see who he is.

“I would rather you play it into him and he looks rubbish, so we know what we’ve got because, right now, I don’t know what he is or what he’s doing. I’m not pointing the finger, but you have got to help your team-mates find their feet in the team.”

Neville agrees with his former team-mate

Gary Neville also expressed similar concerns regarding Šeško and said that he feels the former RB Leipzig striker is ‘nowhere near’ match fitness.

The English pundit said that he felt ‘United got worse’ when they made substitutions. He also made an identical claim last week after United’s opening weekend defeat to Arsenal.

Hopefully for the Red Devils, they can see more of their new Slovenian powerhouse in the coming weeks, as he gets up to scratch with his fitness levels and overall readiness.

United have a Carabao Cup fixture against Grimsby on Wednesday night, followed by a home fixture against Burnley. Šeško will be desperate to get off the mark at his new club, and these fixtures may present the perfect chance.
