Rio Ferdinand sends message of encouragement to Man United star after Crystal Palace victory

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has sent out a comforting message to a Manchester United player on social media, who appeared disheartened following their victory away at Selhurst Park.

After a hard-fought 90 minutes in South London, Manchester United were able to secure a brilliant comeback win away at Crystal Palace to get The Reds back in the winning column after a shocking defeat to Everton on Monday night.

After going behind to a retaken Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty, United were able to equalise through Joshua Zirkzee, who was able to score his first Premier League goal in nearly a year with an acute finish into the bottom right corner following a clever free kick from the captain, Bruno Fernandes.

Just under 10 minutes later, United found themselves ahead following some quick thinking once again from Fernandes, who rolled his free kick into the path of Mason Mount, who was there to smash what would be the winner into the bottom left corner under the wall for his second of the season.

However, despite the positivity of Man Utd’s significant comeback to claim the three points, one player seemed dejected at full-time after being subbed off in the 54th minute.

Leny Yoro struggles against Palace

The young Frenchman was not alone in terms of not having his best game in a red shirt at the weekend, with many other United players looking off the pace in the first half. The team went into the halftime break trailing one-nil.

However, after being at fault for Palace’s penalty, bringing Mateta down through on goal, Leny Yoro would have already been feeling annoyed at his actions, with this only likely to have been amplified after he was then subbed off just nine minutes into the second half.

After being replaced by Noussair Mazraoui, the 20-year-old was pictured on the United bench, slumped over with his head in his hands, visibly upset following the substitution.

Once again at full-time, when the squad went over to applaud and celebrate with the away fans, Yoro appeared notably down amongst a buzzing United squad.

The match winner, Mason Mount, was quick to notice this and instantly went over to comfort the young Frenchman as the team made their way over to the away end.

Rio Ferdinand’s show of support

It’s safe to say that Leny Yoro has a special place in Rio Ferdinand’s heart, with the former United defender being one of the Frenchman’s greatest supporters since joining the club in 2024, having interviewed him early in his United career.

After seeing a tweet made by UTDistrict on X of Mount going over to comfort Yoro, Ferdinand put out a message of encouragement for the young defender, replying to the tweet, reading:

“This game can send you crazy at times… Use these learnings as fuel. He’s a young player + will bounce back. Hard work, dedication & his talent is tops. New day tomorrow 👊🏼❤️”

Despite him seemingly going through a bit of a tough patch at the moment, which is to be expected of a defender of his age who is still learning and adapting to the Premier League, there is absolutely no doubt about the player’s quality.

United fans will be sure to back Yoro throughout the next run of games, where hopefully he will be able to let his quality shine through once more and remind fans and rivals alike of the quality and potential he possesses.
