Rio Ferdinand explains ‘huge disappointment’ under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United fans will agree
Rio Ferdinand has explained one ‘huge disappointment’ so far under Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford after a mixed first six weeks in the job.
Manchester United endured another setback on Monday night, falling 2-0 to Newcastle United in a poor showing at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim has admitted that the challenges of the role are greater than he anticipated, having had just four full training sessions to implement his ideas.
The 39-year-old is attempting to implement his own system and there have been a lot of issues, particularly with players trying to adapt to their new roles.
Ferdinand explains ‘huge disappointment’ under Amorim
Former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has claimed that the new head coach is finding out the ‘difficulties of joining such a job ‘brutal’ nature of the job on his hands.
The Premier League winner has echoed Amorim’s opinions that it is very difficult to improve the team with minimal time on the training pitch.
Nevertheless, Ferdinand also believes that it is a ‘big disappointing’ that there have been too few players showing their ability to adapt to the system so far.
“He did stress in his comments after the game that he has had four training sessions with the team in six weeks,” Ferdinand said of Amorim on his YouTube channel.
“And when you’re looking for what are the reasons why there has been issues with the team and with the results in the time he has been there, I think that has to be a huge part.
“Any manager will tell you that you need time on the training pitch, if they want to put their philosophy into play, they want to create the confidence in the team.
“They want to make sure the triggers are done at the right time, then they need time on the pitch. He hasn’t had that, so there is a combination of problems.
“I think the inability to coach a team on the training pitch is contributing to the bad results, I think the profile of the players there do not fit what he wants to do, and he is finding that out in a brutal way. One of the reasons why is because he hasn’t been able train with these guys.
“We have seen with other teams and players with new managers come in with new ideas, some players become adaptable and can adapt to it. We are not seeing enough players in this team, if any, become adaptable to what he wants right now which is a huge disappointment.”
United’s issues are being pinned on Amorim’s system
Many fans agree with Ferdinand and argue that there are only a small handful of players who have truly adapted well at this moment. Amad Diallo may be the only real standout.
But it also feels like quite an easy ‘out’ to claim that all of the issues being shown currently are because of the system change. That simply isn’t the case, though.
There are a lot of basics missing from the team, which is down to several factors including the personnel and confidence of players.
Set-pieces have been a major issue, while simple mistakes that shouldn’t be made in any system are also way too common.
For things to improve this season, it is not simply about the system but a lot more things that need to improve.
