Rio Ferdinand has dismissed Manchester United fans who are calling for the club to sack Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the 2023/24 season.

Manchester United have had their worst start to a league season in Premier League history, having lost four of their opening seven fixtures.

Erik ten Hag‘s team have also lost five of their opening nine fixtures across all competitions, with a recent loss against Crystal Palace in the league causing #TenHagOut to be trending on social media platform, X.

Former title-winning Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has refuted these claims, explaining that Ten Hag must be given time – but that the club need to start picking up the pace from here on out.

“At the end of last season, everyone who watched Man United was saying, ‘They’re not where everyone expects them to be, but you can see they’re improving,” said Ferdinand.

“At the start of the season, for one reason or another, it seemed like they had regressed. We are therefore waiting for a response. Remember when he [Ten Hag] started last season – poor results at the start.

“I can understand where the negativity is coming from, I can understand why some of the fanbase is booing at the stadium. He still needs time. Reactions like ‘ah, get rid of him’, you have to give him time.

“He showed he can improve the team, improve the players, but they need to get going now.”
