Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United duo winning Euro 2024 is now “written”
Rio Ferdinand believes that it is now “written” that a Manchester United duo will be lifting the 2024 European Championships trophy this summer.
With the 2024 European Championships now entering the final eight, Manchester United have five representatives remaining from an initial eight.
Tuesday evening saw Altay Bayındır progress with Turkey, while a 2-1 win over Slovakia on Sunday booked Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw‘s ticket to the quarter-finals with England, where they will play Switzerland.

Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot had a close brush with an exit after a nearby 0-0 draw with Slovenia concluded with a shootout, where Fernandes converted his efforts, and goalkeeper Diogo Costa made three stunning saves in a row to send Portugal through.
Scott McTominay crashed out with Scotland at the end of the group stages, while Rasmus Højlund and Christian Eriksen exited with Denmark following a 2-0 loss against Germany in the first knockout game.
While Portugal’s progression was tight, England’s was even more dramatic. Slovakia opened the scoring in the 25th minute, and an acrobatic finish from Jude Bellingham in the 90+6th sent the game into extra time.
Harry Kane then scored very early in extra time, and England held on for the remaining 28 minutes to secure their passage to a tie against Switzerland.
Rio Ferdinand, speaking after the game, has now explained that he feels England’s last-gasp win has secured them the right to think they will take the Henri Delaunay trophy home, meaning Mainoo and Shaw would return to Old Trafford as European Champions.
“There comes a time in a tournament when you actually start believing you’re going to win it, and I think this was the moment. I really do,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE.
“On the way back to base camp now, they will be celebrating and having a few beers, maybe if they’re lucky.
“They’re through to the quarter-finals, on the best side of the draw, it’s written in the stars. It’s written! We’re going to win it.
“Maybe I’m getting carried away but I don’t care, I don’t give a monkeys. I’m getting carried away because I’m an England fan, I’m emotional, and I love it.”
