Rio Ferdinand makes “brutally honest” point about Rúben Amorim, Manchester United fans must listen

Manchester United fans must listen to Rio Ferdinand as he makes a “brutally honest” point about Rúben Amorim’s current state of affairs at Old Trafford.
Manchester United edged past Ipswich Town with a hard-fought 3-2 victory in the Premier League, as Harry Maguire’s commanding header sealed all three points for Rúben Amorim on Wednesday night.
Despite Amorim stressing the importance of a strong start, United fell behind within minutes. A mix-up between Patrick Dorgu and André Onana gifted Jaden Philogene a simple finish into an empty net, giving the visitors an early lead.
United hit back quickly, with Bruno Fernandes delivering a dangerous free-kick that forced Sam Morsy into an own goal. Just four minutes later, a scramble in the box following a United corner ended with Matthijs de Ligt smashing the ball home to put the hosts 2-1 up.
However, the game took another turn just before half-time when Dorgu was sent off for a reckless challenge on Omari Hutchinson. Ipswich capitalised instantly, drawing level on the stroke of the whistle to send the sides into the break at 2-2.
Despite being down to 10 men for the entire second half, United responded within minutes of the restart. Another pinpoint Fernandes corner found Maguire, who rose highest to head home the winner. From there, Amorim’s side showed grit and determination, digging deep to see out a crucial victory.
Ferdinand’s “brutally honest” Amorim point
Following the full-time whistle, former United defender Rio Ferdinand spoke to TNT Sports about his assessment of Amorim’s opening few months at United.
United last faced Ipswich in November 2024, which was the 40-year-old’s first game in charge, and the ex-Red was asked if he’s seen improvement in Amorim’s side since that day.
“I think if we’re being brutally honest, there’s not been the progress that we all anticipated,” Ferdinand explained. We have to understand where he came from and how successful he’d been and the silverware he’d brought to Sport Lisbon.
“The anticipation of him coming was like, wow, what an opportunity we’ve got now with this young manager who’s been, I want to be successful in his time there. And he hasn’t transferred here.
“I actually sat with him the other day and he was like, you can see there’s a desire, you can see there’s a work ethic behind the scenes and he’s nipping at everything to try and get this right and turn it around. But things haven’t been smooth for him and he hasn’t managed to get it to where he wants to at this point in time.
“But I think he needs to just get to the end of the season and really regroup and then start building again and build the team and coaching the team because right now they’ve been stuttering along, and that’s probably being polite in the way I’ve said that, and they’ve just got to get to the end of the season.”
United fans must listen to Ferdinand
A lot of noise has been made surrounding Amorim and his opening months at Old Trafford, by pundits and fans alike.

With the head coach keen to stick to his 3-4-3 system, some have called into question whether he is the right man for the job at Old Trafford, with some of the decisions made causing fans to worry.
However, Ferdinand is right – Amorim needs to get to the end of the season before he can sort out the more significant issues in his squad. The former centre-back explained he does not feel United have enough athletic players in the squad, and this can only be changed once the summer window opens.
United fans need to give Amorim time and space to get to the end of the season before they cast more solidifying judgements on the 40-year-old.
He has been far from perfect since he joined, but he’s come into a club that’s in complete disarray from top to bottom, and no manager in the world would be able to play perfect football in this environment.
If the football does not get better next season, then serious questions can be asked for Amorim. But for now, he needs to be given until the end of this campaign.
