Rio Ferdinand’s 2-word message about “brilliant” Manchester United star speaks volumes
Rio Ferdinand had only two words to describe the performance of a “brilliant” Manchester United star against Ipswich Town on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United secured a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town in the Premier League, with Harry Maguire’s header sealing all three points for Rúben Amorim on Wednesday night.
Ipswich struck early after a defensive mix-up between Patrick Dorgu and André Onana gifted Jaden Philogene an open goal. United responded swiftly, as a Bruno Fernandes free-kick led to a Sam Morsy own goal, before Matthijs de Ligt fired home from a corner to make it 2-1.
The game turned just before half-time when Dorgu saw red for a high challenge on Omari Hutchinson, and Ipswich equalised on the stroke of the whistle.
Despite being down to 10 men, United reclaimed the lead moments into the second half as Maguire powered in a Fernandes corner. Amorim’s side then dug deep to see out a hard-fought win.
Ferdinand reacts to “brilliant” performance
While Fernandes rightly won the Player of the Match award after creating all three of United’s goals from set-piece situations, Leny Yoro is another man who has come off the pitch with a plethora of plaudits.
Playing as the left centre-back in the absence of Lisandro Martínez, some were worried that he would lose a few of his passing options as he’s right-footed, but Yoro was fantastic.
In fact, former United defender Rio Ferdinand could only muster two words to speak about Yoro in reaction to a post showing how good the young defender was on Wednesday evening: “Love it”.
After missing the first few months of the campaign due to a foot injury and having a few performances off the bench toward the beginning of Amorim’s campaign, Yoro is starting to look like a proper centre-back, even though he’s still 19.
Amorim reacts to Yoro’s performance
Speaking to club media after the game, Amorim highlighted Yoro’s performance alongside goalscorers De Ligt and Maguire at the back as a highlight of the game.

“Harry, Mata, and Leny – In a difficult moment, they had more quality with the ball than in certain games, it is a good feeling for a coach to see that. They did a great job,” he said.
United signed Yoro for around £52 million in the summer, with many questioning why the club would choose to spend such a large amount of cash on an unproven player, even though Real Madrid were also targeting him.
However, his performance against Ipswich, as well as a few others earlier in the year, is starting to show how Yoro can develop into one of United’s most important players in the coming seasons.
At just 19, there is so much room to grow, and Ferdinand’s praise speaks volumes about where the heights Yoro can reach.
