Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand made an honest admission of United’s performance vs Newcastle after the Reds suffered their first defeat of 2026.
It was a bitterly disappointing evening for Manchester United on Wednesday night as Michael Carrick’s side suffered their first defeat of 2026.
Following Jacob Rasmey’s red card, United would’ve been hoping to assert their authority and produce a dominant performance. That, unfortunately, did not happen.
Anthony Gordon put the Magpies ahead shortly after Ramsey’s red card through a penalty, but Casemiro quickly levelled the score on the stroke of half-time to conclude a chaotic ten minutes of football.
United looked lethargic in the second-half and failed to put the ten men of Newcastle under any kind of pressure for sustained periods. Substitute William Osula produced a moment of brilliance in the 90th minute to put Eddie Howe’s men ahead and end United’s unbeaten run.
Ferdinand opens up on United’s performance
Rio Ferdinand came out with an honest assessment of United’s performance at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night.
“Newcastle deserves that,” Ferdinand admitted when Newcastle scored. “We’ve not been at the races!”
Even though United had a man more for the entirety of the second-half, that was hardly noticeable. If anything, United looked like the team with ten men.
Carrick has done an exceptional job and losses are part of football, but losing in that fashion will undoubtedly leave Carrick extremely frustrated.

United still in a very strong position
While United’s showing against Newcastle was way below par, there is still a lot to be optimistic about going into the last stage of the season. United are third and in a very strong position to finish in the top four and secure Champions League football.

Chelsea have looked quite good under Liam Rosenior and they continued their solid form with an emphatic 4-1 on Wednesday night against Aston Villa.
Villa on the other hand, who are level on points with United, have only won one of their last six Premier League games and have failed to provide their fans with much reason for optimism.
Liverpool lost to 20th place Wolves on Tuesday and have failed to find consistency this season, and Arne Slot’s men now find themselves three points behind United.
While there are enough problems for Carrick to solve, United are in far better form than their competitors for top four, and with only one game a week, United should have enough in the tank to get Champions League qualification across the line.
