André Onana has had mixed form at Manchester United this season and made a glaring error in the latest defeat to Brighton.

Manchester United dropped three points at home on the weekend after a 3-1 loss against Brighton and the mood at Old Trafford has dropped even further.

While the team did not deserve to win the game, they were still in with a chance when the score was at 2-1, but André Onana made a horrible error to gift Brighton a third.

The Cameroon international made an “awful” blunder after he spilled a routine cross into the path of substitute Georginio Rutter, who made no mistake in front of an empty net.

Onana has been a Jekyll and Hyde player for United this season. He has produced incredibly important saves but also made terrible blunders that have cost his team.

His latest mistake has once again sparked conversations about whether he is good enough to be the goalkeeper at United.

Ferdinand’s brilliant stance on Onana

Amidst the debates about the shot-stopper’s recent performances, ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand has offered a balanced view on the situation.

Speaking about Onana’s mistake against Brighton, Ferdinand explained that fans also must recognise that his crucial saves in the previous game allowed United to win against Southampton.

But his overall conclusion on the 28-year-old is that mistakes are always important as a goalkeeper and that he needs to ‘cut them out’ in order to succeed at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand told his YouTube channel: “He’s had a couple of moments that you wouldn’t want to see on your clips. But look at the last game, he probably enabled us to win that game.

“People forget that. Amad got the hat-trick, but he made two unreal saves before that to actually keep us in the game.

“But goalkeepers live and die by big glaring mistakes. He needs to cut them mistakes out if he wants to continue.”

Onana could be dropped vs Rangers

It was a brilliant point from Ferdinand but it appears that Ruben Amorim is debating his position in the team for the upcoming Europa League game against Rangers.

Onana has featured in all six of United’s Europa League matches this season but might be set to start on the bench for the first time this Thursday.

According to a report from FourFourTwo, discussions have taken place between Ruben Amorim and his staff about whether to drop Onana for this game.

Altay Bayindir could be poised to make his first European appearance for the club, having delivered an impressive performance in last week’s FA Cup victory against Arsenal.
