Rio Ferdinand has revealed what he feels is a big mistake INEOS have made at Manchester United, and it has nothing to do with the club’s football.

INEOS’ current plan for Manchester United is to win the Premier League title in 2028 with Rúben Amorim at the helm of the team.

United CEO Omar Berrada revealed plans for “Project 150”, which aims to see United’s men and women teams to win their respective leagues to coincide with the club’s 150th anniversary in 2028.

“Mission 21” aims to secure United their 21st Premier League title, while “Mission 1” surrounds the goal for the women’s team to win their first Women’s Super League title in 2028, too.

However, considering the struggles of both teams this season, some have called into question whether three years is enough time for the club to build both teams to the point of sustainable success.

Ferdinand’s biggest INEOS mistake

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has been very vocal surrounding his former club in the last few seasons, and speaking on his recent podcast, the 46-year-old believes that it is a mistake to put a deadline on winning the league as it adds unneeded pressure on Amorim.

“It raised eyebrows, I think, for me,” Ferdinand explained when asked if 2028 a realistic taraget. “When you put a date on something, that adds a hell of a lot of pressure.

“You can look at it that way, it adds a lot of pressure, but it’s also something to aim at for the guys at the club. So you can look at it a couple of ways, but he [Amorim] is now going to be held to that by the media, 100%.

“Not so much by the fans, but by the media, they will be holding INEOS to that. And like, Project 150, it coincides with the club’s 150th anniversary, so I understand it’s nostalgic, and you look at it and you go, it’s great, it looks great, but… Since 2013, we’ve not won a league, and 2028 gives us what, three years?

“That ain’t long, you know? It’s a quick turnaround.”

What Amorim said about the 2028 goal

Ferdinand is not along in his thinking, especially with respect to how United could possibly become English champions in 2028 consderig their dire positon the club are in right now.

However, Amorim has been very open as to how he feels the club can regain their footing and climb towards the 2028 Premier League objective, which is through focusing on little steps.

“Yes, we talk about that. Our focus is to win the Premier League, and we can change everything in a few years,” he said at his pre-match press conference before the 1-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur.

“In this moment, we are in a difficult position, but we need to work every day and focus on the little steps.”
