Rio Ferdinand has jokingly opened up on the possibility of Manchester United tabling an offer for Mohammed Salah amid his problems at Liverpool.
There is very little doubt that Mohammed Salah is one of the greatest-ever players to grace the Premier League.
The Egyptian juggernaut has scored 250 goals in 420 games for the Merseyside club and produced 116 assists.
Despite registering 34 goals and 23 assists in 52 appearances as Arne Slot’s men lifted the league title, the 33-year-old has not been the same this season, and recently blew relations out of the water with an interview claiming the club was trying to ‘throw him under the bus’ for their poor campaign so far.
Salah has not started in Liverpool’s last four games and has not played a single minute in their last three, all of which have avoided defeat. There is a real sense that the player has now played his last game for Liverpool ahead of the January transfer window.
Ferdinand jokes about United’s move for Salah
Despite his age, his stunning campaign last time out and the mountain of issues at Liverpool have left people feeling this is more of a blip for Salah than proof of a rapid, unfixable decline, making him a potentially attractive option in the winter transfer market.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand stated that he believes Salah would never accept a move to his former club, as he doesn’t think he has the extra level of bite to make such a controversial move.
“There’s no way Mo Salah goes to Man United,” Ferdinand said. “I don’t think he’s got that trait in him that Wazza [Wayne Rooney] or [Carlos] Tevez had, where he goes the extra mile.
“But yeah, I would make an offer, a public one as well! It would be unbelievable, wouldn’t it? It would be a joke.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that the Liverpool players don’t want Mohamed Salah to leave because he helps them win trophies.”
Does Salah fit United’s transfer strategy?
To a certain extent, signing Salah at United would fit Amorim’s criteria for Premier League-proven players at Old Trafford. It’s hard to deny one of the world’s best wingers.

However, over the last two seasons, Liverpool were very interested in then-Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo to replace Salah at Anfield, but in July 2025, United signed him instead.
Mbeumo is now United’s top scorer this season with seven goals, and has been the club’s best player during a mixed patch of form, so bringing in Salah would be the antithesis of what co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is trying to build.
United saw this with Cristiano Ronaldo’s second stint – bringing in an ageing player who is used to lighting the world on fire and trying to fit them into a team structure is not going to work.
