Revealed: Ruben Amorim’s full reaction after Man Utd lost Geovany Quenda race to Chelsea

Ruben Amorim wanted to reunite with Sporting wonderkid Geovany Quenda at Manchester United next season but Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign the exciting teenager.
Manchester United fans had anticipated Geovany Quenda’s arrival at Old Trafford in the summer, given the importance of the wingbacks Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
Amorim provided Quenda with his debut at Sporting and the pair had a great relationship, which made a potential deal seem very likely despite United’s position in the Premier League.
However, following United’s Europa League clash against Real Sociedad this week, they would have been stunned to learn that Chelsea had swooped in to secure the youngster.
Despite surpassing £1 billion in transfer spending since 2022, Chelsea sealed an eight-year deal with Sporting for Quenda, who has already completed his medical.
The 17-year-old will remain at Sporting for the next season on loan before potentially being in Chelsea’s plans for the 2026/27 campaign.
Amorim’s reaction to United losing Quenda race
According to GiveMeSport, Amorim and those at Old Trafford have been left in “shock” after Chelsea’s move for their summer target emerged.
It was explained that there was initial confidence that Quenda would make the move to United regardless of their European status next season.
The report added that Amorim had been “eager” to reunite with the Portuguese wonderkid, but now has to return to the drawing board to identify a suitable replacement.
Amorim previously labelled Quenda as a “complete” player and missing out on such a target will be a blow to the United head coach.
United can’t compete with Chelsea package for Quenda
It was originally reported by David Ornstein that Chelsea would be paying between £37-42 million on signing the teenager.
That has since been followed up by some interesting reports from Portuguese outlet A Bola, who suggest the full fee could be much more than that.
It was claimed that the initial fee for the deal is indeed £42 million, but there is the same amount of cash in potential add-ons.
The report finalised that Sporting believe £21 million of those add-ons are “easily achievable” and so expect to receive at least £63 million from the deal.
If that information is correct then United cannot do much about losing out on the player. They are simply not in the position to offer that amount of money for a 17-year-old to go on an eight-year contract without even joining the club for another 16 months.
Those at Old Trafford will be judged with who they identify as the best alternative to Amorim’s ex-star ahead of the summer window.
