The Manchester United squad wanted to create their own history ahead of the Carabao Cup victory as Luke Shaw detailed the pre-match talk ahead of the final against Newcastle.

Erik ten Hag won his first trophy in charge of the club on Sunday evening and it seems like it’s only the beginning of the journey.

Manchester United are a club that needs to win silverware. It’s part of their identity and that’s what made the cup victory crucial to the development of this squad.

However, this squad does not want to be compared to the previous victories that are remembered so fondly by supporters, they want to create their own legacy and give those fans the chance to celebrate trophies again at Old Trafford.

“We spoke before [the game] that we want to create our own history here,” said Shaw when speaking to Sky Sports. “With the new team and new manager, and I think today is the start of it.

“[We are] getting a taste of this now [and] we want more.”

Ten Hag also made this statement ahead of kick-off when speaking to Sky Sports. The manager and players believe they can write their own script at the club.

“Manchester United is used to winning titles and trophies but this team hasn’t until now, we have to write our own history,” said the United manager ahead of the game.

The mentality of this squad is not only clear through their words but also their actions.

Despite winning their first trophy in over half a decade, United were back in training on Monday morning to prepare for their FA Cup clash against West Ham on Wednesday.

“We are in [training] today,” said Shaw. “There’s no days off. There weren’t really many celebrations last night.”
